Marine base to conduct blood drive

MCLB-ALBANY — Marines, sailors and civilians at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany are going to be rolling up their sleeves to donate blood at the on-base American Red Cross blood drive scheduled for Dec. 14 at the Thomason Gymnasium.

“What a great gift to give this holiday season ... lifesaving,” Col. Don Davis, commanding officer of MCLB-Albany, said in a news release. “I and my executive director will be giving blood, and we will be challenging all of our Marines and civilian employees to do the same.”

The drive will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to the base community only.

Someone in the United States is in need of blood every two seconds. More than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day, even with less than 38 percent of the country’s population eligible to give blood, officials with the American Red Cross said.

Active-duty military and civil servants aboard MCLB, at their supervisor’s discretion and workload permitting, are being authorized liberal leave in order to participate in the drive.
