ALBANY -- Janet Culver Woods of Albany died on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Magnolia Manor in Americus. A memorial service for Ms. Woods was held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Monday, December 10, 2012.
Mrs. Woods was born on August 6, 1927, in Seaford, Delaware. She was the only child of George and Helen Culver. A graduate of Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, DC, Mrs. Woods majored in fashion merchandising. She married Albert Woods in June, 1947. Prior to their move to Albany in 1965, the Woods lived in Raleigh, NC, Little Rock, AR and Alexandria, VA. In 1967, Mrs. Woods opened Crawford-Woods, a ladies' specialty store, in the New Albany Hotel. The store was then moved to a house on Slappey Drive, and later to Westgate Drive. Mrs. Woods also owned stores in Athens and Columbus. She was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
After her husband died in 1990, Mrs. Woods sold her business. She volunteered at the Albany Museum of Art, Albany Area Hospice and St. Paul's Episcopal Church Soup Kitchen.
Mrs. Woods is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nealy and Dunn Stapleton of Albany, and her two granddaughters, Culver Scales and her husband Chuck, of Los Angeles, and Dixon Dunavant and her husband Greg, of Atlanta. She is also survived by one great granddaughter, Mary Pearson Scales.
