Squawk of the Day - Dec. 13, 2012

"If they find money to open the closed library branches, then they can find money to give county employees a raise. Five years without a raise and a higher cost of benefits result in me making less than I did when I was hired. But yet, commissioners want to spend half-a-million dollars to re-open two unused libraries."

Amazing the way political minds work isn't it? I guess they feel they can buy more votes with the Library issue than they can with treating their employees fairly.

They are getting sales tax money to refurbish the library. They cost of opening one back up could have been figured in the cost of remodeling. The money is still rolling in on that as we speak. The employees have been moved and are still getting paid and that is a big cost that is part of the $500,000. As far as salaries go, you are getting paid very well for Albany. Substitute teacher make minimum wage, no benefits and have not had a raise in more than 6 years. So what is your gripe.

We, the employees state wide are the ones that support these entities money wise, with the taxes we pay in as well as for the people that receive a check monthly as a result of our working, and supporting this country. We will always be the people that are forgotten when it comes to better pay and working conditions.

Actually county employees are about a decade behind corporations. My actual pay, spending power, went down the last six years of employment. The worst blow was when the CEO looted the retirement. This economy is poverty up as opposed to trickle down, so make plans county employees. Have no debts upon retirement since your golden years will be more economically modest than you have been promised. Oh, this sounds ugly, but when it happened to us nobody made a protest, so when it happens to you I will not be able to drum up any sympathy.

Red, got a question......are you saying you had a county administrator who looted your county retirement system? Maybe I misunderstood your statement. If so could you elaborate more. My good friend had that happen to her but it was a private corporation and after nearly 35 years of work there she was left with ZERO. At 66 years of age if a settlement is ever reached she will most likely be long gone and never see a penny.

It was a corporation. It was allowed due to legislation labeled "competiveness" since it was advertised as making US companies more competive. We went from defined benefits retirement to cash equivalent. It was challenged in a court case "cooper vs IBM". We lost. We lost the court case and a majority of our retirement. The same is going to happen to government employees from the bottom up.

OK thanks.....she worked for a large family owned company that was a large retailer and the big honcho took the retirement fund and figured it was his money. They took him to court and by the time the trial was over there wasn't much left and they are still fighting. She was once offered $17 a month for life....hahaha.... a lifetime pension of $17 a life......wonderful huh, for 35 years of work. I am hoping she sees some money after she worked so hard all those years because her Social Security and additonal she will get as a widow just won't cut it.

What a joke!! I worked at the courthouse once and I observed that it took six employees to do the job of one - that is, if that person worked diligently! People were inclined to word harder getting out of the job they were paid to do than it would have taken to do the job!!! And I have to agree with Sis Ruby on this one - If you can't afford it, make do with what you can afford!

YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS???? The City of Albany has more incompentence than I have EVER SEEN!!! I know becasue I worked there; notice the past tense of the verb!!!

Everybody's paid too much already and just needs to learn to live simply. Drive a Kia instead of a BMW, stuff like that. Keep the car for 250,000 miles and take care of it. Change the oil every 5,000 miles.

Don't people understand that we can't keep going on like this in the city, county, state, and nation, spending more than we have? It's not the government's money! It's our earned income!!

The biggest joke about these commisioners is you know they don't run their own finances the same way they do ours because most of them are very well off. Its just another way that they show taxpayers/voters don't mean crap to them. But people vote the the person again & again then expect change, who's the real dumbies.

If you want pay for performance, work in the private sector. Of course if you don't do your job, then you would actually be fired.

@alleebrin, it seems like there are a lot of government employees that have that mentality. City, state and federal they are pretty much the same in many cases. Of course you will find one occasionally who earns their pay but it seems many do not do the task that their job description requires. Their job, (it seems), is to work as hard as they can to get out of doing thier real job and some are very good at it, almost like they have been sent to formal training to be taught exactly how to NOT do thier jobs when I agree alleebrin, it would actually take a lot less brain power and most of the time physical energy if they would just do their own jobs but.....NOOOOOOOO. it also is very common to see these same type people have a chip on their shoulder and get angry when someone pressures them about doing their job. I just don't understand that. If they hate working that much why don't they join the other 80% in this town go on welfare?
