Squawk of the Day - Dec. 14, 2012

"A person eligible for food stamps gets $133.26 a month in Georgia. Assuming 30 days in a month with three meals a day, that is 90 meals. Divide the $133.26 by 90 and that works out to $1.48 per meal. No caviar on those tables. Still want to squawk? First, I suggest you try that for a month."

That $133 a month is more than I spend a month on groceries. I only spend $100 a month. Course you can buy a lot of bags of potato chips and soft drinks with $133 dollars. Point being food stamps should be for the bare necessities. I don't consider potato chips, soft drinks, chocolate milk, ice cream, cookies cakes, candy and doughnuts necessity items.

bigbob 1 year, 9 months ago

Good try but your math is way off, don't forget the free breakfast & lunch at school. I don't believe people have a problem helping the needy its the useless I don't like helping. You know the ones that drive their cady's escalades, hummers, etc to pick up their freebees.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 9 months ago

I call BS on spending $100 on groceries a month. Maybe if you "eat out" nearly every meal or you look like a starving African child...

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

Why would you call it BS? You don't know him. I keep my grocery bill to less than $30 a week myself. I just buy the things I need and not all that junk stuff, course I eat out a lot and don't cook much so i don't need much groceries.

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

Let;s see less than $30, which could be as low as $20, so 4 X 20 = 80. I rest my case.

0

chinaberry25 1 year, 9 months ago

Then why are some of them getting $1600/mo. This does not include WIC or the two free meals they get for the school children. So you had better change your figures. If they are getting such a small amount, why are they buying candy bars and cases of bottled water and bottled tea? Both of these could be gotten from the tap and tea made in a pitcher. I was also under the impression that the amount of food stamps you get depends on your income. Some get more, some get less.

0

whattheheck 1 year, 9 months ago

China, the figure cited is the "average" amount per person so some do get more. For a family of 4, this is over $500 month which ain't bad for a free thing. Averages have a way of hiding some of the excesses. And it is not unusual to get behind a cardholder in line that has multiple cards in the wallet--I saw one well dress, young one in the bread store look through four cards before deciding which one to use for a $5 purchase, then drove off in a sporty new car.

What seems missing in most comments, and the squawk, is that people should be expected to provide some of the monthly money for food, not the taxpayer provide 100%. How dare we expect one to pay for any of their food? One thing common with the Peachers is a lack of "iron chefs" willing to do much cooking. If there were, money would certainly go further and some of the "grossly obese" would not be so gross as they stand in the free food line at the charitable giveaways. Thank goodness we have the charities as enablers in the process of making sure we have plenty of "needy" to give to. Bah Humbug!

1

AuntieDee 1 year, 9 months ago

Are you serious? Who in the heck gets $1600 per month worth of food Stamps? That's Preposterous? I make $65 000 per year but can't afford that kind of grocery bill.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 9 months ago

$65K, how do you make that much money?!

0

agirl_25 1 year, 9 months ago

My husband's and my retirement is about that....is there a problem?

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

Is that combined or individually? If you make $65,000 a year individually in retirement, that's a hell of a retirement plan.

0

agirl_25 1 year, 9 months ago

Combined..but my share was small......I only worked the minimum quarters under SS and then had a bad accident and spinal injuries and had to stop working, so was under SS disability until I turned 62 and then retired under his SS. Actually last year it was $68,976,00....but with deductions, etc, and because I am disabled and he is a veteran and disabled, and the other deductions, age, etc, we only paid taxes on $3,803.00. Don't blame me......these were under the Bush administration and the tax laws he had in place..I had nothing to do with it.....

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

Well even combined that is not too bad.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 9 months ago

No, I was being sarcastic towards auntiedee for flaunting her yearly pay.

0

stc1993 1 year, 9 months ago

I knew someone who got over $1,000 a month. One of my ex tenants had 3 daughters & 10 grandkids that lived with her.

0

stredr357 1 year, 9 months ago

You are wrong squawker. You may not be getting the full amount, but I know for a fact that a family of three got over $500 a month for six months when they were out of work for only 3 1/2 months but the system gave them 6. And you wonder why the government is going broke. Either you don't know the system, the right people, or your the the wrong color.

2

whattheheck 1 year, 9 months ago

You are likely correct since the amount is an "average", a fact not mentioned in the squawk. Averages tend to make the poor situation look more palatable to the taxpayer particularly when its use is not disclosed.

0

AuntieDee 1 year, 9 months ago

Please tell us what color you have to be to get food stamps? When I'm in the grocery line I see blacks as well as whites and hispanics with EBT cards. Enlighten us please about this other color.

0

RedEric 1 year, 9 months ago

Two years ago a family of four in Georgia received $668.00 per month in food stamps. I don't know if there have been raises since. You can look it up. A family of four will receive well over $60,000 per year in money and services on welfare. This country spends $1 Trillion on welfare per year. Nearly half is fraud. Look at all of the congressmen and senators who are multi-millionaires and never held anything, but a government job. If we could eliminate fraud we could run all of the programs without debt. Locally you know people are abusing the system. borrowing children to raise your allotment. Receiving welfare while holding a full time job. Using multiple ID's to get double welfare. Liberals and Gimmedats attack complaints by telling an almost true story. That mayor inNJ, Booker did this on one of the socialist news channels. It's almost true, but morally a LIE?

0

FryarTuk 1 year, 9 months ago

The fraud needs to be prosecuted and when it is the liberal, arrogant federal judges need to obey the law and send these people to jail for a long time.

0

southwestga 1 year, 9 months ago

stredr357-even with your figure, it's just $1.85 a meal. What's your point ?

0

fcarroll 1 year, 9 months ago

It depends on how much money you make of get for free as to how much money you get for the number of people living in a house hold. Also how much your rent, power etc cost mthly. Some draw more food stamps than some spend monthly and eat better also.

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 9 months ago

I wish someone would give me $133.26 for food each month........

2

daisymae 1 year, 9 months ago

If they only get $133.00 a month in food stamps, then we obviously need shopping tips because everytime I have been in line behind someone with food stamps, their grocery cart is slam full of high priced meat, junk food and the most expensive ice creams and store bought cakes and the meat alone would be well over that $133.00 limit. And for the record, I spend less than $133.00 a month for groceries.

0

ontario1966 1 year, 9 months ago

I don't care what they get? But I feel that all records IE Birth Certificates match! SSN Match! Drivers or ID is Matched! And a drug test be taken! And a Credit Check along with State and Federal social Security be matched to see if they are really working! And if living in public assistance housing, make sure the Escalade does not belong to the owner or the 32 in Crome rims are on a monthly payment! After all that than see if the family really qualifies for assistance!!!

1

ontario1966 1 year, 9 months ago

And if you get mad at what I typed to bad! Tells me your hiding something, and your on welfare! Get a job and be productive! I did it as a single father, I struggled, but I did it! Your just lazy, and want all the handouts you can get! At least I have courage and pride! And my kids are proud of their Father!! Ooh and my kids have jobs and not on welfare! What public housing will yours be living?

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 9 months ago

Cant argue with1966 on this one.......It is sad that towards the end of a long hard month worked, I am eating ramen noodles and then you have someone who hasnt worked 1hour in line with 3lbs of crab legs........

0

waltspecht 1 year, 9 months ago

Funny, but beans and rice with a neckbone thrown in were a good meal for me. Yes, it can get boring, but it is nurishing. It is all a matter of choices. Plus if you grow greens in a small garden it helps. Am I poor now, no. However, how do you explain obese folks on welfare and assistance if they are not getting enough money for food. Now in Country you could tell a real Villiager from a Cong by their weight. For the real Villager existed on just enough to avoid starvation. The Cong took the so called excess to support the Patriots fighting to free the Villagers from oppression. Now when you can show me some skinny folks standing in front of me in the Grocery line and paying with a State card, I will believe your claim. However, when I stand there and with my own eyes watch over $200 of food get wrung up on the card, and then some extras are wrung up and paid for in cash off a roll, I might believe you.

0

agirl_25 1 year, 9 months ago

Watch how many of those things they are buying are carb laden foods too...bags and bags of potato chips and other snack foods that are loaded with carbs and carbs equals fat. The other day my husband ran into a grocery store for some bread and milk and jumped in the truck and told me to watch the cart the fellow was bringing out for the lady walking behind him. He said she must have just gotten her card because her cart was loaded...with junk. I never knew the card paid for junk food but it was loaded down with bag after bag of snack bags of individual potato chips and Frito chips, all kinds of individual chips......9 of them...we counted them. There were a few bags of chickens tossed in and about 5 bags of greens, also 6 huge bottles of Sunny Delite type drink, the really big ones, that to me is nothing more than orange colored water. Why not real orange juice? Or milk? We sat there wishing we had been behind her in line so we could have seen the full order..to see how much the final total was and how much her share was. Most likely $3.56 .....and then she probably complained. Oh yes, and she was a bit overweight..well not a bit...she was obese.

Here's your math bsrn:

"food stamps x # of kids + WIC + subsidised housing + free breakfast and lunch at school + free cell phone + social security crazy/asthma kid checks + medicaid + free emergency room + subsidised energy bill + free handicapped parking sticker 'cause I'm too fat to walk very far from the nice late model vehicle that I have money to pay for somehow + don't have to get up and go to work",

How's that? I know I left a lot of stuff out but you get the drift!

PS - Get a clue, y'all....you don't have the grey matter muscle to go up against me. It's just not a fair fight and I feel a little sorry for you sometimes 'cause you don't even realize it. You're like the little grey mouse in the middle of the highway giving the finger to the big MACK TRUCK that's about to run him down.

Greetings from NYC. Beautiful city. Had welfare food last night at Dizzy's Jazz Club@ Time Warner Center - COLLARDS, GRITS, BEANS. I don't know when they discovered the food stamp cuisine but it hasn't been too long. The point is we got good grub down south & these folks love it.

WOW!!!! RedEric, Ontario, Walt, and Sister...................you guys said it all.
If the system would catch all of the fraud, this country might be in the "black" instead of in the "red". It is very discouraging for all of us hard working folks to get in line at the grocery store and see buggies full of food, high priced, junk, etc. and the person have a top line cell phone, a manicure and pedicure, an expensive hair do going on and then pull out a Georgia Peach card. Then when you get in the parking lot they have a more expensive auto then you do. I see this all the time and it is not right that our hard earned dollars go to those who are too lazy or just want to produce babies to get a "check". I am for helping those who need it, but when it becomes a lifestyle and one that has gone on for generations and generations, then there is a major problem.

I once saw a lady use a government card to purchase boxes of candy, crackers and snacks to sell in her in-home neighborhood store in the projects. I said something to the lady &the clerk. I was told to mind my own business by the shopper &the clerk told me it happened regularly but she would lose her job if she said anything.

0

agirl_25 1 year, 9 months ago

That is/was a regular thing when I worked home health. Not only were the in-home stores in the projects selling candies and cookies to get by (some of them truly did need to make a bit extra to survive) but some were a front for running numbers and some of the cookie selling clerks and store owners were the ones you later read about who were deep into food stamp fraud in the 90's who later were convicted and sent to jail...as I said before, after a while some of the patients became family and family looked after one another. No one wanted to see family hurt and someone had to care for the elderly, as DFACS did a piss poor job so we nurses and aides became their surrogate family.

0

sammyrayw 1 year, 9 months ago

If you truly need the help, I have no problem with you getting help. But STOP taking advantage of the system. When will the government wake up and put an end to all of this? I get so tired of being in line behind someone paying with food stamps for a buggy full of name brand everything then walk outside and get into an expensive SUV or BMW. My husband and I both work full time jobs and we do not eat like these people.

1

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

When will the government wake up...? Believe me they ARE wide awake and know exactly what they are doing....which is the 21st Century Version of the plantation where they pay you to vote for them for your lifetime. It will stop one day (that day is coming sooner and sooner) and then we will all be S.O.L.

0

AuntieDee 1 year, 9 months ago

I know right. Those damn Republicans!

0

ontario1966 1 year, 9 months ago

I agree Sammy! And I'm really surprised nobody has complained about what I said? I think it's because they are still in bed, sleeping off that 40oz? Thank you all all for supporting what I wrote? I'm very truthful and I also agree 100% at what you wrote also, one other note? DFACS is a major joke! And probably getting kick backs for helping these thieves!

0

agirl_25 1 year, 9 months ago

ontario.....don't know about DFACS getting kickbacks or not, but I do agree they are a joke.....I have never seen such a useless bunch of people in my life. In my years working in home health and dealing with DFACS in 3 counties it was like talking to a brick wall.....never met so many worthless people drawing a paycheck. I once called DFACS to come to a house where I felt a patient was being abused and the worker came in late in the day, all dressed up and asked if we could hurry this along, she had a party to go to (was Christmas week). She stood in the middle of the room, refused to sit down in the chair I offered her, turned up her nose and made a face (you know one of those "ugh I might catch something" faces). I wanted to smack her and I was known as a smart mouth who shot it off like a cannon and did not hold back, gave her a piece of my mind and told her she was not going to look or smell very nice at the party if she didn't get off her high horse and start taking notes. I got her a piece of newspaper to sit on and plopped her down on a chair in the center of the room and showed her the condition the patient was in. No human being should have to be subject to that type care. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got called on the carpet, big deal......wasn't the first time....but the patient got out of the house.

Last year while shopping in a local Super Market I noticed a well dressed man ordering 20 custom cut rib eye steaks at the meat counter. When I went to check out he was in the next line telling the cashier that he was having a cook out that weekend and used food stamps to pay for the steaks. When I got to the parking lot he was loading the steaks into a NEW Volvo. Really got my goat.

0

Clif 1 year, 9 months ago

The bigggg problem with the fraud is the local people working in these welfare offices are from the same group getting all of the benefits. Visit an office where the applications for welfare & food stamps are received and check out the workers race. I know personally of an elderly white couple, who both worked hard all of their productive life, paid into the system, could barely scrape by when working, and now trying to exist on social security, paying rent, utilities, insurance, driving a 20 year old car and buying gas for it at well over $3.00 per gallon, with several other monthly expenses. Never wanted food stamps or any handout. They finally applied for food stamps after a caring neighbor encouraged them to do so. The black workers at the office told them they would check out their application & it would be about 60 days before they would know if they qualify. About 90 days later they were told that they would get $16.00 monthly.....

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 9 months ago

I was with you guys up until now.....Lets not act as if only one race is taking advantage.....or as if only one race is hard working........

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

Blacks receive welfare, food stamps, etc in the USA at a rate per capita of 4 times that of Whites and Hispanics and 6 times that of Asians. It's a fact.

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

I believe they get more than a measely $133. One lady and I mean one big lady had two shopping carts filled with groceries that she paid using an EBT card and unless she is a smart bargain shopper with multiple coupons, I think she had a little more that $133 dollars worth of groceries. Enough groceries to feed an entire school.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

There are many people who do need a temporary safety net. They are welcome to it. Just don't let it become a lifestyle like tens of thousands do in the SOWEGA region.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

Where does the money come from to build all these brand new huge super fancy Black churches all over town? I can count 6 that have been built or are currently being built? Where do those multiple millions of dollars come from? Y'all geniuses help me out here.

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 9 months ago

Here we go with race...... My guess would be the same place all of the huge White churches were built from...... The hard working members of the congregation.......

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

This is not a racies question, I just asked a question. I haven't seen a new White church built in Dougherty County in the past decade. In fact my White friends tell me that their churches are really struggling to meet budgets and support their ministry in this down economy. Meanwhile I see a half dozen new Black churches built, requiring millions of dollars to build. It's a serious, honest question.

And don't miss the facts I posted above about "who gets welfare".

0

TRUTH101 1 year, 9 months ago

and yet and still.....THERE ARE MORE WHITES ON WELFARE/FOODSTAMPS THAN BLACKS.....You can pull the percapita card all you like. THE FACT is that there are more whites in these entitlement programs than blacks.........BLACK, WHITE, LATINO, ASIAN, or whatever else these programs should do a better job of screening the particpants.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

It's meaningless to say what you say since 85% of the US population is White! You think that lets you off the hook? How about this: "Blacks receive welfare at a rate of 400% higher than any other US demographic". Does that make you feel better about it? It's a fact.

0

VSU 1 year, 9 months ago

Truth can't handle the truth.

0

AuntieDee 1 year, 9 months ago

Truth...don't be drawn in by this ignorant fool. His question is clearly out of place.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

My question absolutely belongs in this discussion. Here's why: Blacks receive welfare in all its multiple forms at a rate of 4 times that of Whites or Hispanics. Dougherty County's rate would be much, much higher than this. Meanwhile millions and millions of dollars are going towards building large fancy Black churches (which sit idle 85% of the time). Why is there a shortage of money for the poor in Dougherty County? But as usual you will not answer this legit question but will rather attack me and pull the race card instead. My question goes to the heart of the discussion and is not out of place. Are you afraid to give a serious, well reasoned answer? I think this question scares you to death. I know it does me.

Since according to you, I'm an "ignorant fool" why don't you avail me of some of your wisdom in this matter?

The group who I believe are trying to transform our country are Progressives. Margaret Sanger was a progressive. She established planned parenthood. She was declared one of the 100 most influential people of the 20 th century. In her book " pivot of civilization" she advocated forced sterilization of non contributors. I have no doubt that if these people achieve their goal of complete control all of those on welfare rolls will take a ride to the nearest planned parenthood office for a quick operation......slight swelling, some pain no problem.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 9 months ago

RE, if I had my way, we would do it your way. But the Progressives (aka Democrats) want MILLIONS and MILLIONS MORE people on welfare roles because it means MILLIONS and MILLIONS more VOTES for the D candidate.

See what happens if you're Black but you don't take the Black party line.

An African-American ESPN commentator is under fire for racially charged comments about Robert Griffin III, the charismatic rookie quarterback for the Washington Redskins who has been lauded for his talent, brains and even ability to unite partisan lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Since being drafted out of Baylor University after winning the 2011 Heisman Trophy, Griffin, who graduated early with honors and qualified for the Olympics as a hurdler, has become the face of his NFL team. But Rob Parker, a veteran newspaper columnist who appears regularly on several ESPN television and radio shows, played the race card on ESPN’s First Take on Thursday.

**“Is he a brother, or is he a cornball brother?” Parker wondered. “"He's not real. Okay, he's black, he kind of does the thing, but he's not really down with the cause. He's not one of us. He's kind of black, but he's not really, like, the guy you want to hang out with because he's off to something else.

"We all know he has a white fiancee. There was all this talk about how he's a Republican ..."**

I have to admit, I do get a little tight-faced when I'm behind someone in the store with a cart load of groceries; and I'm trying hard to stretch the little bit my husband and I have left to feed our family. But you know, coupons are a big help as well as catching those weekly sales at the local grocer. Getting upset with them isn't going to change anything. The only thing I can do is budget better, buy smarter, and grow my own vegetables!
