BLAKELY -- A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the Blakely Cemetery. Rev. Dwight Bishop officiating. Serving as active pallbearers will be: Barry Cox, Fletcher Thompson, Mac Cox, Dee Grist, Dee Plyer and Judson Herrington. Honorary pallbearers will be: Perry Jarrett, Herbert Swords, Buddy Sites and John Golden. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30.
Ernest Pace Whitehead, Jr., 74, passed away on Dec. 16, 2012 in Dothan, AL following a lengthy illness. He was born in Cuthbert, GA on May 3, 1938 to the late Dr. Ernest Pace and Mary Grist Whitehead. His grandparents were the late Mr. and Mrs. William J. Grist of Blakely, GA and the late Dr. and Mrs. James M. Whitehead, of Vienna, GA. A graduate of Blakely Union High School and the University of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Mr. Whitehead was a retired salesman who also served in the United States Army. He resided in Dothan, AL with his wife, Anne Williams Peters.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Whitehead is survived by a daughter, Susannah Whitehead Franklin and by three granddaughters; Hannah Franklin, Lillian Franklin, and Sophie Franklin all of Dayville, Ct. He is also survived by three step children; Debi Moore (Mark) of Pinckard, AL, Barry Cox (Michelle) of Wicksburg, AL , and Molly Butler of Birmingham, AL, and by eight step grandchildren.
Mr. Whitehead has a sister, Caroline Whitehead Plyler (Dwight) of St. Simons Island, GA, and a brother, James G. Whitehead (Stephanie) of Blakely, GA as well as four nieces; Mary Ouida Plyler of Miami, FL, Jennifer Thompson (Fletcher) and Jamie Cox (Mac) of Blakely, GA and Caroline Herrington (Judson) of Danville, GA, and a nephew, Dwight Plyler (Anna) of Dunwoody, GA. He is also survived by 6 great nieces and 4 great nephews.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Children's Autism Organization or the the American Heart and Lung Association.
