TIFTON, Ga. — U.S. Rep. Austin Scott has been named chairman of House subcommittee for Horticulture, Research, Biotechnology, and Foreign Agriculture.

The Tifton Republican was named to the position Thursday by House Agriculture Committee Chair Frank Lucas, R-Okla.

“I am honored Chairman Lucas has chosen me to lead this important Subcommittee. Horticulture, research and foreign agricultural relations have and will continue to play a large role in our country’s economic recovery," Scott said Thursday. "I look forward to working with my colleagues on the subcommittee to develop legislation that will continue to help our farming communities.”

The Horticulture, Research, Biotechnology, and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee generally has jurisdiction in matters pertaining to fruits and vegetables, honey and bees, marketing and promotion orders, plant pesticides, quarantine, adulteration of seeds and insect pests, and organic agriculture, research, education and extension, biotechnology and foreign agriculture assistance, and trade promotion programs, generally, Scott's website states.

Scott is in his first term as a congressman for the 8th Congressional District and was elected to a new two-year term in November without opposition. Before his successfull 2011 campaign, Scott was a representative in the General Assembly.
