ALBANY, Ga. — Theatre Albany’s Artistic Director Mark Costello has announced that he will conduct auditions for the comedy “Harvey” at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the theater, 514 Pine Ave. Anyone interested in auditioning is welcomed to attend. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
“Harvey” is the Pulitzer Prize winning comedy by Mary Chase. The original Broadway production was a long running hit and was made into a classic film starring James Stewart. The comedy centers on Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend, Harvey, who happens to be a 6 1/2-foot-tall rabbit. The trouble begins when Dowd to starts to introduce Harvey to guests at a society party, his sister, Veta is hosting. She has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate and decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter, Myrtle Mae, and their family from future embarrassment.
Problems arise, however, when Veta is mistakenly assumed to be on the verge of lunacy when she explains to doctors that years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also. The doctors commit Veta instead of Elwood.
Costello is looking to cast six men (20 years old and older) and six women (20 years old and older) for the comedy, which will open April 12. Call the theatre at (229) 439-7193.
