“There is life after suffering,” said Kathia Collins before the beginning of the Haven of Hope’s “Night to Remember” held at Albany State University’s ACAD Auditorium Saturday.
Collins, executive director of the domestic violence relief organization, set up a night of speakers, dance, spoken-word poetry and music for survivors and their supporters.
Among the speakers, Pauline W. Mansfield, author of “The Turtle Story,” a book about her seven steps to breaking away from domestic abuse said she had suffered domestic abuse.
“It is just so hard to get past the denial,” Mansfield said. “One of the steps in the book is to recognize it (domestic abuse) for what it really is.”
The event raised money to assist domestic abuse survivors in education, housing and emergency services.
