ALBANY, Ga. -- Merry Acres Middle School won the 25th annual Darton College MATHCOUNTS competition this past weekend at the college.
Robert Cross Middle School, coached by Littla Hayslip and Jann Lockhart, was the runner-up, followed by Sherwood Christian Academy, which was coached by Matthew Sheets.
Lee County Middle, Baconton Community Charter School and Dougherty International also sent sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams to the event.
Dallas Ausburn of Sherwood was the individual high scorer and also the Countdown winner.
During the five-hour competition, the first three rounds determined the participants of the final Countdown Round.
The team from Merry Acres, coached by Debra Smith, comprised Adam Beddingfield, Adam Clenney, Juliette Hu and Lennis Price. The team advanced to the state MATHCOUNTS competition, which will be held later this year in Atlanta.
The top five scorers not on the winning team will also compete in the state competition. In addition to Dallas, Nathan Alligood of Robert Cross, Chloe Beall of Baconton, Jarrett Smith of Merry Acres and Justin Seo from Lee Middle, will also make the trip.
The competition is part of a national tournament sponsored by the Society of Professional Engineers. The tournament includes public and private schools. and is geared toward getting students to pursue mathematical and technical careers.
