Officials continue fire investigation

SMITHVILLE, Ga. — The case involving a fire that left a couple dead in Lee County is an ongoing investigation.

Chief Deputy Lewis Harris of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the bodies of the pair who died in a mobile home fire in Smithville late Saturday were being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for further examination.

More information on the couples’ cause of death was expected to be available today, Harris said.

The couple, identified as Garry George and Donna Bailey, died as George heroically tried to save his girlfriend from the blaze — which broke out on the 1000 block of Highway 377 next to Ellisville Motors before 11 p.m. Saturday.

The couple had been dropped off by relatives just 30 minutes before the fire began, authorities said Sunday.
