ALBANY — The Georgia House of Representatives decision to not pass House Resolution 1162 on Wednesday has no effect on efforts to establish a new College and Career Academy charter school within the Dougherty County School System.
The proposed constitutional amendment would have given the state power to approve charter schools in communities over the objections of local school boards.
The Dougherty County College and Career Academy is being established with the blessing of the Dougherty County Board of Education.
“The local charter school is not connected at all to the vote in Atlanta,” said educational consultant Russ Moore, who is helping guide the DCSS through the charter process. “The uninformed reader might assume that our local work is in jeopardy when, in fact, we are on track for a very successful charter school in Dougherty County.”
H.R.1162 failed to garner the two-thirds majority to move the measure to the Senate, falling 10 votes shy of the 120 supermajority needed.
Bill co-sponsor Ed Lindsey of Atlanta immediately called for reconsideration, but it’s unknown whether bill sponsors can pick up 10 additional votes.
