A juvenile witness is questioned by Albany police officers in front of a crime scene at 938 Crawford Drive, where a 12-year-old boy was shot in the stomach with a small caliber handgun before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
ALBANY, Ga. — A boy died after suffering injuries from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen Saturday while at a 938 Crawford Drive residence in East Albany, said Emma B. Quimbley, Dougherty County coroner.
“Can I go with my child,” the injured boy’s mother shouted at the Dougherty County EMS ambulance crew just before they opened the door and let her in. The ambulance sped off to take mother and son to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Police had the crime scene taped off in a wide perimeter as they searched the grounds for evidence. Officers also went into the woods behind the two-story residence.
“We are taking juvenile witnesses to the LEC (Law Enforcement Center) for questioning. We have no suspects,” said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman at about 5 p.m. “He was shot with a small-caliber handgun. Right now that is all we have. We don’t know if he was shot inside the house or outside.”
Neighbors who did not want their names used said the boy was Darius Wallace, thought to be between 11 and 13 years old. His aunt Mary, who would not give her last name, confirmed the identification. The case remains under investigation.
