The mother of a 13-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach jumps in the ambulance to ride to the hospital with her son.

ALBANY, Ga. — A boy died after suffering injuries from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen Saturday while at a 938 Crawford Drive residence in East Albany, said Emma B. Quimbley, Dougherty County coroner.

“Can I go with my child,” the injured boy’s mother shouted at the Dougherty County EMS ambulance crew just before they opened the door and let her in. The ambulance sped off to take mother and son to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Police had the crime scene taped off in a wide perimeter as they searched the grounds for evidence. Officers also went into the woods behind the two-story residence.

“We are taking juvenile witnesses to the LEC (Law Enforcement Center) for questioning. We have no suspects,” said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman at about 5 p.m. “He was shot with a small-caliber handgun. Right now that is all we have. We don’t know if he was shot inside the house or outside.”

Neighbors who did not want their names used said the boy was Darius Wallace, thought to be between 11 and 13 years old. His aunt Mary, who would not give her last name, confirmed the identification. The case remains under investigation.

What troubles me about this article, beyond the death of a child of course, is the refusal of neighbors and even family members from giving their names. If these areas are that afraid, then this town is LOST to the thugs.

Unless people step up to the plate, and quit looking the other way, these things will continue to happen.

I was thinking the same thing. Why are they afraid/ashamed of giving their names?

Several months ago another 13 year old was shoot in the head in this same area. Crime among youngsters is running rampart in that area. I am familiar with area and know firsthand that some police intervention needs to take place over there. DFACS needs to take a look at the parents who are allowing their young children to walk the streets and participate in these crimes. neighbors need to step up and report the crimes instead of shying away from it. Next time it could very well be you kid or relative.

AuntieDee Please come and bring your neighbors to the city commissioners meeting Tuesday February 21 and speak to the commissioners. We need your neighborhood to speak up so the Commissioners will feel the pressure to act to save Albany’s children. Anyone can speak but you MUST call the City Clerk Sonja Tolbert 431-2161 no later than noon on Wednesday prior to the meeting.

Good idea, Abytaxpayer. The Commission needs to hear these stories first hand instead of on the news. That way they get the full effect in person.

Sorry you misunderstood. I do not live in this neighborhood. However, I am familiar with the area. The police department and the commissioners know too well the troubles of this particular neighborhood. These troubles have been reported more than once. This same group of children are also involved in other petty crimes in the neighborhood as well as around the city.

I say that the parents should be held accountable. Where were the parents?

Prayers to the family of this child.

With all due respect, at some point the Preachers and Ministers have to quit raving over yesterday. This is today and their flock is killing each other.

Maybe, when they quit looking back and attempting to hold the flock back they can all look forward to a better day ahead. The "THUG" today knows Grandma's preacher will help him out of trouble rather than to turn the "THUG" over to the Police. Say the "THUG" gets roughed up somewhat while resisting arrest Oh Oh lawsuit time.

May this poor child rest in peace.....................

Another Child Lost To Guns.Seems if it is not guns its drugs. And All of you are right.Untill we all come together and start helping one another this will keep going on.It s a Shame. All you really need is one person to speak up.Untill we all start telling what we see,or not turning and looking the other way,we are in trouble. If this were your Child i am sure you would like for someone not to be ashamed to say what they know.DFACS is a laugh. They dont care.It is up to Us All to keep an Eye out for all GODS Children. My Prayers to the Familey and friends. And may the Good LORD be with You now and Always.

FIRST, MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY FOR THE LOSS OF THIS CHILD. I CAN ONLY SIT HERE AND SHAKE MY HEAD READING ABOUT ANOTHER SENSELESS DEATH OF A CHILD AS MANY OTHERS PROBABLY ARE. THE REAL CULPRITS IN THESE DEATHS IS THE VERY COMMUNITIES THEY LIVE IN. BEGINNING WITH BABIES HAVING BABIES, THUG CULTURE, PEOPLE REFUSING TO COOPERATE AND ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT WHOM THEY CONSIDER THE ENEMY AND THE DEAFENING SILENCE OF THE NAACP AND THE ASSORTED PASTORS, PREACHERS, DEACONS AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS. WHERE ARE YOU NOW? WHY DON'T I HEAR YOUR OUTRAGE,FROM THE STREETS AND THE PULPIT. IF ALBANY HAD A TRUE LEADER IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY THERE WOULD BE MARCHS OF THE LIKES NOT SEEN SINCE THE 60'S.

Yesterday they marched in the streets. Today they walk around with their hands in someone else pockets.

Seems to me, too many times people wait until several people are killed to take action. These things should have been addressed long before this. When you have a crime ridden neighborhood, you had to have known or expect this would happen.
