Worth’s Weaver set to play baseball for one of top JUCO programs in country

SYLVESTER — The pipeline from the Worth County High baseball diamond to Southern Union State Community College continued to flow Friday when catcher Brandon Weaver inked a scholarship to the Alabama school.

Weaver is the fourth Ram player to sign with Southern Union, which reached the JUCO World Series a season ago, in the last five years, and will join pitcher Will Peacock, who signed last year and came home for Weaver’s signing.

“(Peacock) had a little influence, but the main reason is it’s a great program, and they have a good track record of getting people to the next level,’’ said Weaver, who has a 3.8 GPA and is thinking about becoming a pharmacist.

He had the right prescription at Worth, where he led the Rams in just about everything as a junior, batting .407 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.

“He’s an exceptional player,’’ Worth coach Will Smith said. “And he’s done it the right way. He’s worked hard. He worked in the offseason. He didn’t wait for baseball to come to him. He went to baseball and did all the work to make himself a good player.’’
