ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Most golfers love the par 5 holes at the Sea Island Retreat Golf Club on St. Simons Island, but those easy 5s turned into the toughest holes on the course for the Darton men’s golf team, which is in second place after one round in the Coastal Georgia Invitational.
Darton’s Joe Sakulpolphasisan, is the leader by two strokes after one round with a five-under 67.
Darton shot a 295 and trails Coastal Georgia by three strokes, but coach Tom Jones III knows it could have been a much better day.
“We’ve given ourselves a chance to win, but we played the par 5s terribly,’ he said. “We had six 7s on the par 5s. There were a total of 20 par 5s for the team and we double-bogeyed six of them.’’
Darton’s Neil Graham shot a 74, and Shad Tuten followed with a 76. Chase Jones and Nick Green both shot 78.
