DONALSONVILLE — Jakari Martin sure picked a heck of a time to have a career night.
Martin went off for 27 points — a season- and career-high —on Tuesday night to lead the Seminole County boys basketball team to a 47-41 win against Quitman in the opening round of the Region 1-A Tournament — a win that marked the Indians’ fifth win in a row after losing nine of 10 at one point after Christmas break.
“We’re getting hot at the right time,” Seminole coach Kevin Godwin said. “What a night for Jakari. He came up huge for us.”
Martin also played hero down the stretch, hitting an and-one play and nailing the free throw to put Seminole up by four points with less than 10 seconds to play to all but seal the win.
Seminole now advances to play No. 1 seed Calhoun County today in Camilla in the quarterfinals, with the winner advancing to the semis and securing a spot in next week’s Class A tournament.
MILLER COUNTY GIRLS 57, WEBSTER COUNTY 39: Mallory Diamond scored a game-high 24 points, Antronette Rosebrough added 14, and Ulbrikia Daniels chipped in12 as the Lady Pirates advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1-A tournament, where they’ll play Randolph-Clay today in Pelham.
TERRELL COUNTY GIRLS 39, BAKER COUNTY 27: T.K. Jordan led all scorers with 19 points and Nydrah Wright added 11 as the Lady Greenwave eliminated Baker County and Cierra Hawkins (15 points) from the 1-A tournament to advance to face No. 1 seed Pelham today at Pelham.

CORDELE — The Dougherty boys and girls both swept Americus out of the 1-AAA tournament Tuesday as the Lady Trojans won, 44-40, behind 17 points from Quannesha Gatlin and 10 from Amber Ward, while the boys — 58-45 winners — were led by Mike Miller (15) and Alford Brown (12).
Americus’ girls were led by Kahler Fletcher’s 20 points in the girls game, while Michael Volley led the Panthers with 12 in the boys.
Dougherty’s boys now advance to face No. 1 Monroe on Thursday at Westover, while the Lady Trojans take on No. 1 seed Westover on Thursday at the Boston Garden.
CRISP COUNTY GIRLS 59, CAIRO 40: The Lady Cougars were led by Kiedra Green’s 19 points and also got a double-double from Nasheema Oliver (15 points, 15 rebounds) to advance to the 1-AAA semis on Thursday against Monroe at Westover.

COLUMBUS — Paul Chukes (18 points) and Rodney Glenn (17) led the Bainbridge boys to their 16th win in a row and advanced the Bearcats to the second round of the 1-AAAA tournament, where they’ll play Northside Warner Robins on Thursday.
SOCCER:
ALBANY — The Westover girls soccer team opened the 2012 season Tuesday with an 8-1 romp of Bainbridge, while the Bainbridge boys shut out Westover, 4-0.
Nellie Young led Westover with three goals, Amie Loudermilk added two and Katie Brown, Mallory Morgan and Carley Turner scored one each. Savannah Cook scored Bainbridge’s only goal.
The Bearcats were led by Emilio Hernandez with three goals in the shutout win.
