ALBANY -- Mary Yielding slipped peacefully into eternal rest at her home in Albany on Valentine's Day. She was 88. A heart of gold has passed from us.
Mary was born August 14, 1923 in Grady County, GA. Her parents were G. Gordon Prince and Lucy Godwin Prince. After growing up on the family farm her mother's early demise necessitated Mary moving to Albany in 1940 to live with older siblings. On a very hot and fateful August day in 1944 she met a handsome young aviator, Walter Yielding, at Radium Springs. Walter was stationed at Darr Aerotech as a flight instructor. As the pace of life accelerates during wartime they were married on October 25, 1944 and remained so until Walter's death, May 27, 1999. The union produced two stalwart offspring, Lynn and Van. Between having children and tending to Walter, Mary worked as a dental hygienist for almost 50 years. Many Albanians remember her diligent cleanings.
She was also devotedly involved in the ministries of First Baptist Church Albany and Albany's First Assembly of God. She was department director of three year olds for 25 years at First Baptist. Mary also loved her kitties and at one time had at least 50 cats making at least temporary residence in her back yard. She also loved to bake and was locally renowned for her coconut and caramel cakes. As fate would have it she passed away sitting up in her kitchen awaiting her lunch.
Most of all Mary loved the Lord Jesus Christ and was watched over every moment of her life. Her faithfulness was a blessing to many in her community.
Mary had ten siblings. She was preceded in death by Owen Prince, David Prince, Kendall Prince, Louise Prince Stevens, Gordon Prince, Jr., and Eva Prince Dawkins.
She is survived by Chester Prince, Glynn Prince, Sue Daughtery, and Anita Tinsley. She is also survived by her daughter, Lynn Akins; her son, Van Yielding (his wife Donna); and grandchildren: Lynsey Akins, Sean Akins, and Connor Riley.
The family particularly wants to thank Mary's caregivers: Rebecca, Carol, Vickie, Phyllis, Sybil, Bonnie, and Elaine. Also sincere thanks to Albany Hospice, Alzheimer's Caregivers Timeout (ACTO), and the staff at Season's Christian Care.
