Lee’s Anthony finishes 2nd at state

Lee County's Rashaud Anthony finishes second in the Class AAAA 113-pound state championship and ends his career as the all-time winningest wrestler in Lee County history.

DULUTH — Rashaud Anthony couldn’t have come closer.

Last week he was two seconds away from a Class AAAA state sectional crown.

On Saturday, he was two points away from a state championship.

Anthony, Lee County’s 113-pound star wrestler, lost, 2-1, to two-time state champion Cameron Munsey of Pope High School in Saturday’s Class AAAA state title.

“With five seconds left, (Muncey) was just scrambling, holding onto our shoelaces to keep (Anthony from escaping),” Lee County coach Tom Matheny said. “(Anthony) was heartbroken, as we all were. It was a hard loss to take, but he took solace in that he wrestled well. It was very even match, a very close against the defending champion.”

The match was scoreless until Muncey, who also edged Anthony in the state sectional championship match, got two points for a reversal in the second period. Anthony got one point for an escape later in the second period but was unable to score again in the match.

Video of the match can be found at GHSA.tv.

“I’d watch it with you, but I’d probably start crying,” Matheny said.

Anthony, a senior who is leaning toward continuing his wrestling career at Darton College, ended his career at Lee County with a school-record 175 wins. He also set a school record this season with a record of 56-5.
