SGT, Darton, Albany Tech women open region tournament today

Brandan Harrell never focused on finishing with an undefeated Region XVII record even as his Lady Jets marched toward that unblemished mark.

The South Georgia Tech women’s basketball coach always kept his eyes on the region tournament.

The Lady Jets (22-8, 18-0) ran the table in the region in the regular season and will be the No. 1 seed in the region tournament, which begins today with four first-round games. South Georgia Tech will host Chattahoochee Tech, No. 2 seed Darton will host Central Georgia Tech, No. 3 seed Georgia Perimeter will host No. 6 Albany Tech and No. 4 Middle Georgia will host No. 5 East Georgia.

The opening-round games for SGT, Darton and Albany Tech will all begin at 6 p.m.

SGT, which has won 15 games in a row, swept Chattahoochee in the regular season by scores of 84-26 and 59-44.

Darton, which won a coin flip Saturday to break a second-place tie between it and Georgia Perimeter, swept Central Georgia in the regular season, winning the Jan. 28 matchup, 60-59, and taking the Feb. 11 rematch, 77-49.

Albany Tech was swept by defending region champion Georgia Perimeter in the regular season by scores of 76-53 (Jan. 17) and 69-40 (Feb. 11).

Winners of the first-round games will meet Friday in Savannah at Armstrong Atlantic State University for a pair of semifinal games.

The Region XVII final will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at AASU.
