Squawk of the day - Feb. 22, 2012

" I just read in the paper that NASCAR will not let the General Lee run in the parade lap at one of their races because it may offend some people. Well, this has offended me. This car has nothing to do with racism just because it has a rebel flag on it."

The Swastika car will be right behind it. That is equally non-offensive, right?

I guess it would have been okay if they had a Malcolm X or a black Panthers logo on there, or a thug pointing a glock at someone.

I think the ones that are complaining about everything being racist are the racist ones. Seems like every time something has to do with white culture happens, its racist to ppl, every race can express their culture and do whatever they want to do and say whatever they want to say, EXCEPT for the white ppl in this country. Every time a white person expresses their self they are accused of being racist, how can black ppl have BET, African American College, their very own beauty pageant and so on, but when a white person wants to express their culture they are the racist ones, can someone plz tell me why this is??

1

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

Seriously? Whites do have their own television networks, colleges, and pageants - it's called "all of the others". America's culture is synomymous with white culture Want to learn some white history? Want to listen to some white music? Read a book written by a white person? It's all at your fingertips (one of the priviledges of being the racial majority). One of the responsibilities of being the racial majority is not flying the flag that was flying when blacks were treated like property and killed because of the color of their skin.

The black equivalent of a rebel flag car isn't a Black Panthers car, though we may never know - one of the benefits of being black is not having to watch NASCAR.

0

Sister_Ruby 2 years, 1 month ago

Now you're acting as stupid as your picture. There is no "white-only" anything in this country, where blacks cannot participate. You inow that but are just acting a fool.

2

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

I didn't say anything was "white only". I also didn't stoop to calling anyone stupid, because I can use my words. Maybe your next post can back-up your insults with an actual argument. Good luck!

0

tywebb 2 years, 1 month ago

actually, if you re-read your first sentence, you do infer that those things are white only. can a white woman enter Miss Black America? NO. can a black woman enter Miss America? YES (and there have been many winners). it's not called Miss White America. You say being black means not having to watch nascar......so, then who in the world is going to be offended by the General Lee? Really? Are there white people out there offended by that symbol? Seriously???? Or are there just white people who SAY they're offended so people will think they're anti-racism???? And ruby said you were ACTING stupid....she didn't say you WERE stupid.

2

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

You're right, Ty Webb! His was a good post, adding much to the debate...OR...two of the three sentences said I was acting "stupid" and "the fool". His post is a valued part of this conversation. Thank you for sticking-up for him/her/it.

I haven't seen any white television networks, colleges or pageants. I have, however, seen television networks, colleges and pageants where there are races of all kinds...and I've also seen black television networks (BET), black colleges (too many to name)(not to mention all the scholarships tailored directly to "blacks"), and black pageants (Miss Black USA). I can find just as much information (if not more) on black history as I can on white history in the same amount of time. If I want to listen to "black music", all I have to do is turn the radio on or just go to the black television network, BET. If I want to read a book by a black author, I can find one very easily just by going to the library or a bookstore (although I don't decided to read a book just because of the race of the author, that's just ridiculous). So how exactly is being able to find 'black stuff' not at my fingertips????

2

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

I didn't say black history was being kept a secret. I said the rebel flag on a car is insensitive.

0

Somebody 2 years, 1 month ago

You also said the white networks were everything else, which isn't true.as Susan123 said all other networks have all races, but we do have a BET, where is the WET? There isn't one, but if there was they would be called a racist network.

0

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

Again, whites do have WET - it's every network besides BET. Wasn't it odd that "Friends" was set in New York, but none of the characters knew a black person? The Huxtables have been off the air for twenty years. Most network shows are "entertainment by whites, for whites". Having the one black guy doesn't make a show multi-cultural entertainment.

0

VSU 2 years, 1 month ago

Friends is a syndicated program, not a network. I suppose a program having 1 white person and the rest black would make it multi-cultural entertainment.

Let's see, you have Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Jeffersons, My Wife & Kids, Family Matters, Everybody Hates Chris just to name a few that were dominated by black actors/actresses and last time I checked they were scattered throughout several networks. not just BET, so you can't say that every network besides BET is for white entertainment only.

And for the record, I enjoy those shows listed above.

1

Susan123 2 years, 1 month ago

So......just because a show doesn't have a black character means that they are racist....ok. It seems to me that you are the only one here that really seems to have race issues.

And, there actually was atleast 1 black character on Friends. Her character was Charlie (real name is Aisha Tyler) and she was the love interest of both Ross and Joey, and she was in many episodes. And there was also an asian lady too, but I would guess that you probably wouldn't care about that.

1

darnette0101 2 years, 1 month ago

Have you been to a book store or a library lately? The sections for books by black authors is minute! And just like you like to read a book by a caucasian, we'd like to read one by a black person. The only difference, you don't have to think about it. You can just go and pick one up automatically. Black people have to search sections.

0

Susan123 2 years, 1 month ago

As I stated, I don't read a book based on the race of the author. When I go into a book store I don't go "hmmm...where are the books that are written by a black person. I want to make sure I stay away from that section!" Instead, I go into a book store, skim the COVERS of the books, (Not the backs where it give author info) flip through the book, read a few snippets, and then decide that the CONTENTS of the book is worth reading, not at all who wrote it!!

If you are purchasing a book (or anything) else JUST BECAUSE the author is black, then it sounds to me that you are the racist one. I am not going to let skin color be the deciding factor over which book to read. And that is exactly how it should be! The author should not have their work judged by their race! If I were an author, I would like to know that people bought my books because I was a good writer and brought the book to life with my pen, not because I was black or white. But I guess that is just me though, maybe I have more pride over my work.

0

Somebody 2 years, 1 month ago

Well if Blacks don't watch nascar then they don't have to worry about a car with a rebel flag on it. I guess they just watch it so they can cry racism. I say stick a pacifier in their mouths.

1

PatrickY2K 2 years, 1 month ago

Racism is okay if the offended race isn't present? Is that your policy on sinning? "It's okay - no one's looking."

0

VSU 2 years, 1 month ago

That is providing that it is racism, which it isn't, and don't tell me black people don't practice racism. Using your logic, it is okay for blacks to be racist, but damned if whites were to do something considered racist.

3

justme 2 years, 1 month ago

It is because of the area that we choose to live in. Most folks in the south hate the thought that a black man is in the white house, or maybe has as much as the next person. You won't see many black folks at NASCAR events nor will you see many white folks at black events, except for your children who will tune into black tv and music.

1

LuLu 2 years, 1 month ago

I doubt very seriously that anyone who attends NASCAR races would be offended by the Confererate flag. I bet they will be offended, though, by this stunt. Bad move, NASCAR!

0

tywebb 2 years, 1 month ago

if there are thousands of people at a nascar race and small minority (number not race) of them are offended.....too bad!!!!! nascar is a redneck sport! confederate flag is a redneck symbol! just because someone is a redneck does NOT mean they are racist! rednecks and nascar go together like peanut butter and jelly. It just fits.

2

Somebody 2 years, 1 month ago

But you can't explain that to a black.

0

darnette0101 2 years, 1 month ago

You can explain that to a black person, but my questions is why can you fly a confederate flag and enjoy being a "redneck". But when a black person wants to enjoy being "black", we're being racist when we want to see our own people doing good things?

0

AlbanyIsTooDarkDuringTheDay 2 years, 1 month ago

You can enjoy your heritage, just don't cause harm to others in the process.

0

Sister_Ruby 2 years, 1 month ago

In this case it means enjoying your heritage in the closet, not on the street. But hey I thought our Constitution (is it still valid????) had something to cover that about freedom of speech or something? Maybe Obama has done some kind of Executive Order to eliminate that while we weren't looking.

0

beartrap 2 years, 1 month ago

For every black person killed because of the color of their skin, there have been 10,000 white people raped, robbed or murdered by blacks..

1

darnette0101 2 years, 1 month ago

Slight exaggeration isn't it. What about the thousands of blacks that were killed by the white people during slavery? I guess since that's in the past it doesn't count?!

0

AlbanyIsTooDarkDuringTheDay 2 years, 1 month ago

...or the tens of thousands murdered by Africans selling their own people to the English.

1

TheBoss 2 years, 1 month ago

Hope Michelle Obama dosen't show up at the Daytona 500 again acting like NASCAR is her favorite sport.

Sister_Ruby 2 years, 1 month ago

If that's what it takes to implement Socialism in America (ie 4 More Years of BHO) then that's what she'll do. She would probably even drive the General Lee around for a couple of laps.

Another squawk ofthe day chosen to stir up a racial discussion....The only thing I think of when I see the General Lee...where is Bo Duke in his tight jeans? It's a car from a TV show...good grief!

Random question...did anybody see the article put out online yesterday afternoon about the Albany Panthers playing on the now-names Phoebe Field at the civic center. Seems Phoebe is into football now. Mysteriously taken down off the Albany Herald website late yesterday and vanished. Makes you wonder. Hmmmmmm................

Have to add this to the list of politically correct dumb things.

0

whattheheck 2 years, 1 month ago

Well, let's cancel reruns of Sanford and Son and Moving On Up--both are just too racial for me. And I just love today's announcement of the groundbreaking on Smithsonians' new African American Museum--call a museum a white american museum and the torches would fly. If the days of the past were so racist et al,, let's cut out the bad memories brought up by the hoards of civil rights museums that evoke memories of slavery and beatings folks should want to forget--we have one here that was payed for by mostly white taxpayers and is going broke.

In the game of life, the "race card" trumps all and is usually played liberally by those who claim to be "non-racist". Can't have it both ways, folks.

race relations in Albany sucks....No wonder Dr. King failed in this city.....Its hopeless......

0

CJ_Fan 2 years, 1 month ago

Dr. King failed in this city BUT said Albany taught him a lot that he was able to build on as he moved forward with his work. The reason race relations in Albany “sucks and it seems hopeless” is because people like you cannot let go of the past and MOVE Forward. Dr. King moved a Nation Forward while people like you clung to their Hatred and remained stuck in the PAST. Move Forward or Get out of the Way OLD Man…..The Kid

CJ42 once again you prove you are NOT a student of History but that you are just stuck in history...BTW the CJ is right about Dr. King, but that would require you learning something positive and as full of Hate as you are I am betting your head would explode if you learned a POSITIVE teaching from Dr. King. While this is not a Yellow Shoe it fits YOU so Well.

Coach you are such an embarrassment to young people. Your unknowable about Dr. King’s movement or you are one of the ones who called him "De Lawd". Either way You are the PAST…. We are the Future.

Dr. King in his autobiography said: When we planned our strategy for Birmingham, we spent many hours assessing Albany and trying to learn from its errors. Our appraisals of Albany not only helped us to make our subsequent tactics more effective, but revealed that Albany was far from an unqualified failure.

While you say CRAP to just to run your Hating mouth!!!!!

You are a has been OLD Man, GET out of the Way and Albany will move Forward WITHOUT you.

0

coachjohnson42 2 years, 1 month ago

@My FAN.......You have now idea what you are talking about my son....I am not your problem or anyone else's problem. You are so ignorant until its funny. After nearly a year of intense activism with few tangible results, the Albany movement began to deteriorate. During one demonstration, black youth hurled rocks and bottles at Albany police. King requested a halt to all demonstrations and a "Day of Penance" to promote non-violence and maintain the moral high ground. Later in July, King was again arrested and held for two weeks. Following his release, King left town. King and much of the national civil rights movement regarded the Albany campaign as a limited success, won at perhaps too high a cost. Despite the mobilization of virtually the entire black community in Albany, few concessions were achieved from the city government. Divisions between radical and moderate blacks were beginning to tell, and the black community seemed to be tiring faster than the city...........later Dr. King made the following statement about sorry and pitiful Albany....(that you copied and posted in the previous posts)....."The mistake I made there was to protest against segregation generally rather than against a single and distinct facet of it. Our protest was so vague that we got nothing, and the people were left very depressed and in despair. It would have been much better to have concentrated upon integrating the buses or the lunch counters. One victory of this kind would have been symbolic, would have galvanized support and boosted morale ... When we planned our strategy for Birmingham months later, we spent many hours assessing Albany and trying to learn from its errors. Our appraisals not only helped to make our subsequent tactics more effective, but revealed that Albany was far from an unqualified failure"......so if you gonna tell it.....tell it right fool..........I own you!

0

coachjohnson42 2 years, 1 month ago

This is a perfect example as to why your dumb replies are pitiful....... anyone who gives you a 'amen' for your first grade smart az mouth is just as dumb.....go back to Turner Elementary and do your homework little boy......

CJ_Fan 2 years, 1 month ago

COACH A great cut and paste thank you, but it is just more proof you can’t think for yourself. You say I did not tell it right yet you did not refute any FACT I gave, you only added more information to my Fact. But in your first post you said “race relations in Albany sucks....No wonder Dr. King failed in this city.....Its hopeless” yet in your cut and paste Dr. King says “The mistake I made there was to protest against segregation generally rather than against a single and distinct facet of it. Our protest was so vague that we got nothing, and the people were left very depressed and in despair” NOT ONCE did he say he failed, he said he made “Errors in judgment”. Yet you claim he failed and it is hopeless in Albany, while again Dr. King claimed “Albany was far from an unqualified failure". But I will give your point “race relations in Albany sucks” and you are proof of that, while the rest of us work to move forward. So call me all the slang you desire and prove the point why race relations in Albany sucks. You have no desire to work WITH, you just want to punish people who had nothing to do with your “Failure of Albany” ……. Despite your desire to return to the dark days I am not "Owned" by anyone for I am a FREE Man....."The Kid"...MOVE Forward or get OUT of The Way.

Thank you for your lengthy cut and paste to prove I did know what I was talking about.

Field Goal Kid, and so nice to see you following LaTonya Dunn’s story http://www.albanyherald.com/news/2012.... Glad you show your character and that you say Thank You to the same tormented soul that tries to belittle you and disparage you with name calling.

0

coachjohnson42 2 years, 1 month ago

You sound like a baby nerd. Did your mommy help you spell the words? BOTTOM LINE....Dr. King could not get it done here......your pitiful testimony of trying to sound like a professor failed. Race relations suck here because of racists like you....deal with it. I get along with everybody. I just call it like is, and you cant handle it......

0

Abytaxpayer 2 years, 1 month ago

I knew you were delusional. But for you to claim “I get along with everybody” What a Joke you are!
