ALBANY -- Jack Amund Swanson, 83 of Albany died Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at his residence. He was surrounded by his wife and daughter.
His funeral service will be held Friday March 2, 2012 at 11:00AM at St. Teresa's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 2:00PM at Andersonville National Cemetery. Father Steve Pontzer will officiate. A rosary will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 6 PM with visitation to follow until 8 PM at Kimbrell-stern.
Jack was born in Everett, WA on October 31, 1928. He joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1946, under an aviation contract. He attended boot camp in San Diego, CA. In 1947 the Marine Corps offered early release to marines serving under the 2 year aviation contract and he was Honorably discharge in May 1947. On November 10, 1947 he re-enlisted in the Marine Corps and served continuously untilhe transferred to the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve on November 10, 1966. During his time in the Marine Corps her served on various post, Bermerton, WA, Philippine Islands, Quantico, VA, Philadelphia, PA where he met and married the love of his life Michelena D'Ambrosio. They where happily married for 59 and a half years.
He then transferred to Korea where he received the highest award given to an enlisted man, in the Korean Marine Corps, the Wharang Medal with Gold Star. After Korea he transferred to Camp Lejeune, NC where his only daughter, Nancy was born. He then transferred to Indianapolis, IN for recruiting duty the to Albany, Vietnam and Philadelphia, PA.
He was transferred to Fleet Marine Corps and want to work for the Army Electronics Command in Philadelphia. He then transferred to the Marine Corps Supply Activity in Philadelphia in 1973 and in 1976 transferred back to Albany where he retired in 1990.
Jack was an insatiable reader, he loved golf, watching football and baseball and his grandkids. He was a member of the Marine Corps Association, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the V.F.W. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Thelma Swanson.
Survivors include his wife, Mickey Swanson of Albany, a daughter Nancy Swanson Carter and her husband, Larry Michael of Minneapolis, MN, two brothers, Jerry Swanson and Mark Swanson and his wife, Becky, all of Washington, three grandchildren, Lauren Michelle, Jacquelynn Alixis, and Larry Michael Carter all of Minneapolis, MN. A rosary will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 6:00PM with visitation to follow at Kimbrell-Stern.
