Leesburg Some young actors in Lee County are getting ready to present a pretty sweet play this weekend.
The Twin Oaks Elementary School drama organization has a two-weekend run of “Willy Wonka Jr.” opening at 7 p.m. Friday at the school. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. In addition to Friday, performances are set to start at 7 p.m. Saturday and March 9-10. Doors open at 6 p.m. each night.
At a rehearsal Saturday, cast members said the play was hard work, but they enjoyed it.
“It has been hard practicing all of the lines, but it is fun,” said Ace Miller, who portrays Mike Teavee. “I am very excited about my friends being in the play and now I am ready for the play to begin. It is going to be fantastic!”
Alex McComas, a member of the ensemble, said, “I feel very blessed to be a part of this play. We have all worked very hard and long hours but it will all be worth it in the end.”
“I am very excited to be in the play,” said Sidney Frier, oompa loompa 4. “It has been a dream come true because I have wanted to be in one since I was an itty-bitty girl.”
The Twin Oaks drama group began with funding from a Lee Focus grant that required student-teacher-parent-community involvement. This requisite became the cornerstone of the drama club.
More than a dozen plays, most of them musicals, have followed the club’s initial production of “The Wizard of Oz” in 2001.The most recent show was “Seusical Jr,”.which organizers say was a success.
The dram club is under the tutelage of Wendy Edwards, Drama Club sponsor/director, with the help of parents and other staff members.
