ALBANY -- A 60-year-old man died Wednesday after 12 days in the Tift County Jail. He was facing several child abuse charges, a law enforcement report stated Wednesday.
Shelton R. Floyd of Tifton died of apparent natural causes before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the report added. Floyd was arrested Feb. 16 and charged with five counts of child molestation, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes, said David Haire, Tift County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
"EMS personnel responded to the jail and transported Floyd to the Tift Regional Medical Center," Haire said. "Floyd was pronounced dead. Tift County Sheriff Gary Vowell stated that he did not believe there was any foul play concerning the death of Floyd. Vowell has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death."
Sheriff's deputies arrested Floyd following allegations that he used his employment at Tifton's Upon Eagles Wings Daycare to make inappropriate contact with 3- to 10-year-old children. Authorities say abuse allegedly took place in the daycare's van and at the 334 E. Golden Road premises.
