ALBANY -- Mrs. Pernella Burns-Spence, 74, of Camilla died on December 31, 2011 at Mitchell Convalescent Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on January 7, 2012 at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. E.L. Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Oakview Cemetery.
Mrs. Spence was born on September 24, 1935 in Mitchell County. She attended Rockdale School and was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church. She was a retired dietary supervisor with the Mitchell County Board of Education.
Pernella leaves to cherish her memories her husband James Lee Spence, Sr.; three daughters: Juanita Mendez of Camilla, Juanne Thomas (Albany), and Jacqueline Spence (Palm Beach County); two sons, James Spence, Jr. (Bobbie Jean) and Derrick Spence of Atlanta; fourteen grandchildren: Darrius Spence (Jessica), Staff Sgt. Franciso Mendez, Shemorrow Carter (Eric), James Wesley, Dion Byrd, Shemorrow Spence, Petty Officer Eugene Smith, Jeffrey Thomas, Jr., Jalandra Thomas, Javoris Thomas, Derrick Spence, Jr., Devery Spence, Derricka and Brieteasia Spence; thirteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Sams of Orlando, FL and Lucretha Stubbs (Johnny) of Camilla; three brothers: Columbus B. Burns, III (Zelene), Melvin Burns, Alonzo Burns; one sister-in-law, Lucille Edwards; two uncles, Norman King and Lenwood King, Sr. (Minnie Kate); four aunts: Alice Jackson, Daisy Robinson, Alma Burns; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Additionally there are special friends Janet Burns and Lucille Burns.
The remains will lie-in state at the church on Saturday from noon until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at 59 Worley St., Camilla.
