Albany State basketball star freshman April Thomas was named the conference's newcomer of the week Monday.
ALBANY — Albany State’s women’s basketball coach Robert Skinner knew he was getting a talented player when he signed Bainbridge’s April Thomas.
Nearly two months into the season, and Skinner couldn’t be more pleased with his freshman shooting guard.
Thomas, who is averaging a team-high 14.8 points per game, was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Week on Monday, an honor that was no surprise to Skinner.
“Offensively, she is an impact player,” Skinner said. “She brings everything to the table for us, and that’s a good thing. We need our athletes to be well-rounded like she is.”
Thomas has been hot the past three games, and so have the Lady Rams, who have won three straight conference games against Lane, Kentucky State, and Fort Valley State.
The former Lady Bearcats star averaged 13.7 points, three rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.3 assists in those three games, but her recent play isn’t the only reason Skinner is proud of his starting guard.
“She is a heck of a student even more so than a basketball player,” Skinner said. “I was really impressed with her grades. I can’t remember if it’s 3.6 or 3.7, but she had an excellent GPA at the semester. She is doing what she should be on the floor and off the floor. And that’s the kind of kid you love to have.”
