ATLANTA — Deerfield-Windsor’s girls and boys swimming teams each finished third in the field of 25 teams, including the best teams in GISA, at the Atlanta Invitational on Saturday.
“We have a very dedicated team, unbelievable parental and school support this year,’’ first-year DWS boys coach Morgan Garcia said. “Our swimmers had tough competition this meet, but they stepped up to the blocks and got the job done. We had many state qualifiers in this meet. Our team is developing to be a strong contender at the state meet this year.’’
The state meet will be held on Feb. 4 at the same pool.
Ashton Wahbeh, a sophomore, won the 200 meter freestyle, and Nathan McLendon, Daniel Cheshire, Mike Gutierrez and Wahbeh won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.66, their best time this season. McLendon also had a personal best 58.90 in the 100 free, and sophomore Harris Maples had two personal best times in the sprint events.
Haley Daughtry, Maggie Duval, Rena Divine and Hannah Bowe took first place in the girls 200 freestyle relay with their fastest time of the season. Camille Fox and Emily McPeters had a personal best in the 100 freestyle, and Marlee Skinner (50 freestyle) and Glenna Bridges (200 IM and 100 freestyle) also all had personal bests.
Deerfield’s next meet is Saturday in Americus. DWS ends its regular season with a meet at Albany State on Jan. 22.
WESTWOOD BOYS WIN, REMAIN PERFECT IN REGION PLAY:
CAMILLA — Westwood’s boys basketball team moved to 5-4 overall and 4-0 in region play with a 49-29 win against Grace Christian on Monday. Jamie Davis led the way with 16 points.
Westwood next hosts Crisp on Friday.
