Public meeting set on merging of Baker County FSA office

— Members of the Georgia management team for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency have scheduled a meeting on Jan. 26 in Newton to get feedback from the public on the planned merger of the baker County FSA office.

Georgia FSA Executive Hobby Stripling and members of his management team will conduct the meeting at 10 a.m. at the Baker County Courthouse, 167 Baker Place. It will be the agency's only public meeting in regard to the planned consolidation of the office.

A similar meeting in 2007 drew more than 100 people, with those who spoke vehemently opposed to the absorption of the Baker County office into the Mitchell County office nine miles away in Camilla.

Those who cannot attend the Jan. 26 meeting may also submit comments via email to kula.moore@ga.usda.gov, or mail comments to USDA-GA State FSA office, 355 E. Hancock Ave., STOP 100, Athens, Ga. 30601-2775. All comments must be received by Feb. 6 to be considered.

FSA officials say the comments will be taken into consideration before a consolidation plan is finalized.
