AMERICUS -- Mrs. Elsie Cheek Fulghum age 92 passed away early Sunday morning January 15, 2012 at Perfect Care. Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of Aldridge Funeral Services Tuesday morning January 17, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Mike Flowers will officiate. A private burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus. Pallbearers will be Grandsons Tony Chase, Joe Earl Fulghum, Todd Fulghum, Jeff Fulghum, John Fulghum and Justin Fulghum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday afternoon January 16, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Mrs. Fulghum was born February 26, 1919 in Sumter County, daughter of the late Arthur Lee Cheek and Lila Mae Frazier Cheek. She graduated with honors from Union High School in Leslie, Ga. She furthered her education at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus; Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga.; and the University of Georgia in Athens. She was an alumnus of all three colleges with a Sixth Year Specialist in Education Degree. She was a former member of Tattnall Square Baptist Church in Macon and a member of Leslie Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Americus. She took an active part in Sunday School, Women on Missions, Choir, and various committees. She taught nineteen years in the public schools of Georgia and was Library Consultant for the Lake Blackshear Regional Library for ten years, she retired in 1981. She is a life member of both the Georgia Library Association and Georgia Retired Educators Association. She is a member and past President of Sumter County Educators; Delta Kappa Gamma, and honorary society for outstanding educators, in which she was past President; Charter member and past President of Sumter County Business and Professional Women's Club also serving as District Director and State Vice President; past member and past President of both the Leslie Memorial Garden Club and Town and Country Garden Club. She is listed in 1970 and 1971 edition of Personalities of the South and 1971 edition of Community Leaders of America.

Mrs. Fulghum is survived by a daughter Lila Wynelle Chase of Americus, sons and daughters-in-law Clifford Melvin Fulghum, Jr. and Sheila of Americus, Joseph Lee Fulghum and Nita of Shellman, Ga. and John Stephen Fulghum and Cheryl of Meansville, Ga.; also surviving are eleven Grandchildren Tony Chase of Americus, Tami Chase of Salt Lake City, Utah, Teri Chase of Salt Lake, Utah, Melanie Bakkar of Macon, Ga.; Kristi Parks of Vienna, Ga.; Dawn Crittenden, Joe Earl Fulghum, Todd Fulghum all of Shellman, Ga.; Jeff Fulghum of San Diego, Cal.; Justin Fulghum and John Fulghum of Meansville, Ga.; sixteen Great Grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fulghum was preceded in death by her beloved husband Clifford Melvin Fulghum, Sr., they were married from November 27, 1941 to May of 1958, three brothers Arthur O. "Nunk" Cheek, Charlie Thomas Cheek and Roland Cheek.
