ALBANY, Ga. — Just as he reached out to lock the door to his shop at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man opened the door and shot “Cat” the barber.
Franklin “Cat” Thomas, 37, owner of Cat’s Cuts at 318 W. Highland Ave., was hit in his left shoulder by a bullet as he told a gunman he’d closed the shop for the night, an Albany Police Department report stated.
“The victim was able to get to a phone to call for help,” APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. “He was transported to the hospital for treatment.”
No word on Thomas’ condition was immediately available at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Thomas also called his friend, Joe Frazier, who arrived at the barbershop along with police.
“I’d just left him when he called me on the phone,” Frazier said. “The bullet went through him.”
The 300 block of West Highland Avenue is home to the Southside Poolroom, Polite’s Southside Package liquor store and Ness’ Lounge. More than a dozen men spilled out of the businesses after hearing the shot, the sirens and the arrival of police patrol cars.
By 7:45 p.m., police were searching for a shooter described as a tall, black man with a dark complexion, wearing sunglasses and a black hat with a white “A” on it. The suspect’s getaway vehicle and type of gun were unknown.
