amen, so don't blame a teacher......blame moma
coachjohnson42 I blame the parent and teacher ,because parents need to visit the school and I promise you they will be shocked at what go on in the class.Iam a substitute teacher , iam not going to say whats goingon you just go and check for yourself.,
Unfortunately, the answer is just blame their Peer Group. Their Parents don't hold those electronic skills in high esteme, their Peer Group sure as heck does. That is why they are good at it, to achieve recognition from their Peers. Now Coach, come up with a way to direct that Peer pressure towards accademics and we could both retire wealthy instead of working until the Lord calls.
It's cause they would RATHER text, play games, surf the net, etc. instead of study. This works only in the case of "homework" tho, cause they cant take their video games or computers to school and they arent allowed to text during class. The teacher is supposed to get them to want to learn... but why learn since momma and grandma dont work and sit on the porch all day and walk to the mailbox for their check? It all goes back to entitlement mentality... the "not caring". It's sad, because doing these things show they have potential, just no one to encourage them.
BINGO!! BUT YOU AIN'T GONNA GET THEM TO BELIEVE IT OR DO IT.
They figure why study, "I'll get my welkfare check, I want to enjoy myself now. The Guvment gonna take care of me. Let them other folks work to pay my way."
Grow up, the problem is far more wide spread than the entitlement Sect. I have spoke to the new generation on a few occasions, and many feel the only thing they need to know is Computers. Not why they work, not even how they work, just how to use them. You don't need math when you can just punch the numbers into computer. Nor do you need formulas when you can put the problem into a computer with Intranet and ask a properly phrased question you will get the right answer. So, no need to know how the answer was derived, simply come up with the answer. I guess thought just isn't a consideration anymore.
Pretty narrow minded don't you think Walt? I've got 4 kids who can do all the computer stuff, text, play games and still get straight A's because I make sure they do the stuff they NEED to do before they do the stuff they WANT to do. Teaching kids to do right isn't up to peers and I would certainly not blame it on their peer group. It's up to parents to teach kids a work ethic. Peers will never do that. You must be in your 60's-70's to make a silly comment like that.
At Darton,the students spend more time on computers than the professors spend teaching. Why do we need teachers if everything on the computer?
And if all is on the computer, and we don't need the teachers, why do we need the brick and mortar college? Football!
One of the reasons Darton wont hire anymore Math Teachers is b/c they just pile all the kids in a big computer lab and let the math computer programs do all the work. They save money this way, but the kids have to teach themselves. Its awful...Then the kids have to pass the "compass exam" which is another computer-based test just to get out of "developmental studies" or "learning support" classes. Its a racket, because the students are never really taught properly anyway, and Darton knows they will fail the test. When they fail, they have to re-enroll next semester. Darton gets paid again......
@Coachjohnson42 - your comments about Darton College are so far from the truth that it shows your ignorance. Darton College has some of the best and most caring Math instructors there are in the local colleges. I can name several that cared more about their students learning the PROPER methods of arriving at the proper answers WITHOUT technology giving them answer via magic. The teachers that I had the pleasure of learning from encouraged the use of the math lab ONLY when the students were having difficulty and suggested that the students stay OFF the computers and encouraged them to work with the staff in the math lab. Additionally sometimes the math lab offered worksheets and other additional resources so that the students could get extra practice working on a specific theory or concept. Additionally there were teachers within the math program who would assist students with other areas of math that they weren't currently teach that semester. If a student was enrolled in Calculus and had a good relationship with a professor that was currently teaching Statistics, that professor would take the time the student needed to work with that student so that the concepts were learned properly.
Please DO NOT speak of things you seem to know absolutely nothing about. Darton and its Math department you have proven you are ignorant about.
Accademics,,,intranet??? NO wonder they cannot learn , they have a bunch of !@#$%**@! for teachers or adult influences in their lives Get Real...My son came home one day and said the teacher gave him a bad mark because he mispelled floor, Teacher said spell flow He spelled it F LO W, she said it was F L O O R ......get mad at me if you like , but these are the cold hard facts, ebonics.
@sld28sld; I'm sorry sweetie,you must look at the broader picture of what the Math department is doing at Darton. Its a dis-service to a lot of children. Why don't you go down to the testing center and ask them about the passer/failure rate on that compass exam? Its awful.....If those teacher were soo good, why are so many people failing? Then they get put on academic probation after so many attempts of trying to pass that test.Why do you think they require students to have a math lab who are on learning support? If those teachers were so good, no math lab would be needed......think about it....
