ALBANY — Westover’s swimmers jumped into the Albany State pool on Tuesday afternoon, and when they climbed out they had not one, but two Region 1-AAA titles with them.
Westover swept the region swimming tournament for the first time in recent memory as the boys took first place with 436 points — beating Americus-Sumter (377) for the title — and the girls accumulated 461 points to run away from Americus-Sumter, which scored 401 points to finish second.
“It really feels good to win both girls and boys region titles,’’ first-year Westover swimming coach Nick Carlisle said. “It was a great accomplishment. Alex Donnan and Win Bell led the boys and Katie Donnan and Chelsea Lee were leaders for the girls.
“But our real strength was our depth. We got a lot of seconds and thirds. Our depth really helped us out.’’
Alex Donnan won the boys 100-meter butterfly event, and Bell took first in the 100-meter backstroke. Katie Donnan won the 200-meter individual medley, and Lee took home first in the 500-meter freestyle. Alley Hayes won the 100-meter freestyle title for the girls, and Allison Palmer was the region champ in the girls 100-meter backstroke.
Palmer, Katie Donnan, Lee and Rachel Chenney took first in the 200-meter medley relay. Palmer, Lee, Chenney and Jordan Lane won the region title in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Bell, Alex Donnan, Evan Cronin and William Spencer won the boys 400-meter freestyle relay title.
Americus-Sumter’s boys were led by Evan Countryman, who took first in the 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle events, as well as Garret Allen, who captured first in the 200-meter individual medley and the 500-meter freestyle, and David Murphy, who won the 200-meter freestyle title and the 100-meter breastroke.
Americus-Sumter’s girls were led by Miesha Coates, who won the 50-meter freestyle title and the 100-meter breastroke, Chelsea Toms, who won the 200-meter freestyle, and Kathryn Askerzada, who won the 100-meter butterfly.
LEE COUNTY GIRLS WIN REGION TITLE: The Lee County girls team scored 119 points Wednesday to win the seven-team Region 1-AAAA swimming title. Warner Robins was second with 97 points.
The Lee County boys team finished third with 79 points behind first-place Warner Robins (134 points) and Northside Warner Robins (82 points).
Casey Schoenberger won the 50-meter freestyle, Trey Hardison won the 500-meter freestyle title and Hordan Yarbrough won the 200-meter individual medley title to lead the girls team.
The 200-meter medley relay team of Madison Holcomb, Schoenberger, Yarbrough and Julie Johns won the title, and the 200-meter freestyle relay team of Maci Underwood, Johns, Yarbrough and Schoenberger won the title and qualified for the state meet with a time of 1:52.9.
Schoenberger also qualified last week for the state meet with a time of 26.5 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle.
DEERFIELD-WINDSOR BOYS, GIRLS SWIM TEAMS FINISH REGULAR SEASON STRONG: The boys and girls swimming teams from DWS dominated their final home meet of the regular season over the weekend, sweeping titles in the 14-team field.
Freshman Haley Daughtry broke the DWS school record in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:38.50 and also won the girls 50-meter freestyle event. She was also second in the 100-meter freestyle.
Sophomore Emily McPeters had three personal-best times in the 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter breastroke and the 50-meter freestyle, and junior Marlee Skinner qualified for state in the 500-meter freestyle by dropping nine seconds off her old time for a new personal best.
Mike Gutierrez had a personal best in the boys 100-meter butterfly, improving his time by three seconds, and sophomore Ashton Wahbeh took home a first-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle to help lead the boys team.
Both the girls’ and boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay teams dominated the field and placed first in both relays.
