Every citizen would be better off planning and saving for THEIR OWN FUTURE rather than counting on the GuvvMent to do it for them. Say...what's in that SOCIAL SECURITY LOCK BOX??? Right! ... an IOU from a GuvvMent that's BROKE....that gets half it's money from CHINA!! But you don't care about that, Squawker, as long as YOU GET YOURS, right????
I pay into Social Security and so does my enployeer. That is saving fore retirement. That isn't getting something from the "GuvvMent". I also put money into a 401k plan because I kbow social security won't be enough to suport us in retirement. But social security will be in the mix for my retirement, just like it will be in yours. Unless the republicans find a way to scrap it... Those Stupid Idiots.
Yeah it would be really cool if it actually worked like that. In reality, though, that money being taken out of your paycheck for social security is not being "saved," it is paying for someone else's retirement right now. And when you get ready to retire, guess what, there's going to be waaaaaaaaay more retirees than workers, so guess what, again....you're forked.
And don't forget--the reason that Social Security is in such a mess is that they have poached different accounts such that your "retirement" is funding someone's "disability". If they are on SSI, that means they've never worked, and believe me, there are plenty working that system. The people who truly need it spend a year in appeals, while those who call it "crazy money" zip right through and collect. Isn't that peachy?!
By the time the Guvment finishes paying off all these freebies, there won't be any money left in our Social Security or 401K Retirement regardless how much is paid in. My 401K balance bounces up and down every month. One month it's raises up $150, another month it drops down $100. It's like watching a plate being balanced on one finger. You just know any second now it's going to crash.
Name calling because a person decided to vote for someone perhaps you will not vote for.....way to show your class and respect for all viewpoints....
You are entitled to vote for whoever you want even if you choose Obama and his programs. That is what democracy is about, the right to choose. With that said, I have no issues with Social Security being received by those who worked all their lives and now receive a very small percentage of that back. I do not have an issue with Medicare for the elderly and truly infirmed. I do, however, have an issue with being taxed for programs that help viable adults sit at home and do nothing. I take issue with being taxed for programs that I or my family benefit absolutely nothing from. Prices are going up daily on everything. My pockets have been picked clean. I have installment agreements to pay for my health needs. I am not wealthy. I have a difficult enough time keeping my own head above water finiancially. Why should I continue to pay for a program that gives to people who consistently have their hand's out ready to receive, but not wanting to even help a famer who needs his crops picked?
I could not have said that better myself. I agree with you wholeheartedly 100%.
I think your statement that you will vote should be heeded by those of opposing views so that they vote to counter your vote. If the Politicians won't impose term limits on themselves, then it is time for the voters to impose them with the ballot box.
Go ahead and vote to whom you want. But you know that Obamacare is not free. If you want insurance, you will be paying. If you think unemployment is bad, wait until it goes into effect. The war is winding down, so the Marine base will be laying off and all of this trickles down to the little guy. Hundreds of 1000's of jobs are going to be gone nationwide after Christmas regardless of who wins. So you had better be able to stand on your own two feet and not worry about the government supporting you. Medicaid is going to be cut back drastically. Doctors are even turning away Medicare (new) patients. It will get worse after Obamacare. Make sure you already have a doctor or you will not be able to find one.
Oh, you mean you will vote for the tax that is not a tax?
People in Albany love Obumma & all his handouts. Of course people who are to lazy to work (Albany) love the foodstamp prez.
Geroge Bush never handed out "foodstamps" or is it the Repubs. who don"t hand out "foodstamps"?
Handouts? That's a cute catch phrase....unless you make more than 250k per year the GOP does not care about you either
Surely, this squawker exists on the Democrat Slave Plantation. He/she is not worried about the loss of the job market because this person doesn't work anyway. This person, and thousands of others in Albany only look to Slavemaster Obama's houseboy, Sanford Bishop to keep the "free stuff" coming. The only days work they do is a full day of voting several times on election day. Voters like this are why Sanford wasn't concerned when it was announced he had lost last election day. He knew he could count on his field slaves to turn it around for him.
Excuse me sir, as we do have the right to express ourselves, often times silence is golden. Having said that, I wonder what your family and neighbors think of your post today. Let's say the community in general??
I don't care for his use of the slave analogy, but other than that, he's right on the mark. If you notice, his comment has gotten two thumbs up.
Actually 4 thumbs up. And his family and neighbors probably agree with him.
I am amazed how regardless of the topic some blotters relate to race. I am kind of new to Albany. I decided to move thinking the people in Albany were kind thoughtful and progressive. Most people that I meet here are wonderful but the tone of the blogs is sad. Let's exchange ideas on the various topics. Who knows maybe new ideas will flourish. Perhaps new Albany leaders will stand up.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. We are weary and jaded. Living here for any length of time will turn you into a hardened cynic of the worst kind. I don't know what made you think Albany was thoughtful and progressive, but you're way off base. Try California, Oregon or Massachusetts if that's what you're looking for.
It would be great if there was someone at every Voting place in each state who held a sign that said "ID Required". Some will understand why this is needed. Others will say, Huh?Anyone who supports this health care act is uninformed as to what is actually in this law. Many only focus on the surface issues. There is much more behind this law that will cost us much more than money, Our freedoms are at stake and many will not understand this until it is too late! Why do you think the dems wanted to wait until after the election to implement many of the features of the Heath Care Act? Think!
Uninformed??? The republicans had eight years to propose and pass health reform and only worked on the drug problem which helped drug companies but didn't save Medicare anything. "Obamacare" allows adult children to stay on their parents plan until they are 26. It removes the cap on benefits. Before, when you exceded the cap you were on your on. Talk about a death panel... There is plenty of good in the plan. All you need to do is look at it with an open mind.
And, it costs $500 BILLION that we don't have...
What "good" are you referring to? Is it the 21 new taxes? The 47 new agencies? The 159 new bureaucracies? The 16,500 new IRS agents? Or is it the 45% of doctors who have threatened to quit practicing medicine altogether?? We are going to have some SERIOUS problems if this monster isn't repealed!
There is good in the plan that everyone can agree on, I think, such as eliminating the pre-existing condition requirement. It is the individual mandate--you know, the "penalty" as the President called it that the Supreme Court finally deemed a tax, that is very problematic. And for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone thinks that it's so wonderful that a 26-year-old can be covered under their parents' insurance. Maybe if they are in an advanced degree program, but that's already covered under most policies as a contractual matter in that if you can claim your kid as a dependent, and provide proof that he/she is going to school, the insurance company will cover him/her up until 25. This was going on way before Obamacare. At 26, if you're not in college, you need to be responsible for your own insurance. That's the problem with this country. We are raising a nation of spoiled brats that cannot assume responsibility for their own care, which includes my own generation!
Which "FREEDOMS" are you referring to, if you don't mind my asking?
Maybe the freedom to choose having healthcare or not. The freedom to use the doctor of your choice.
Dear Squak of the Day you are obviously one of our local 3 or 4th generation welfare people's here in the Good Life City. All I have to say.
I sure don't know where this squawker gets the notion that "If Republicans had their way, we would not have Social Security and Medicare." If Republicans had their way, there would be more jobs and many handout recipients would have to get off their fat butts and work! That would be a rude awakening , wouldn' it, Squawker?
More jobs under the republicans? Do you remember who lost all the jobs in the first place?
I would vote a stright republican ticket if they promised that if all the jobs they talked about didn't materalize they would ALL resign in two years.
Any takers? I didn't think so.
Obama said that if he didn't turn the economy around, this would be a "one term proposition..." Any takers? I didn't think so. Just saying...
It was the democratic congress that destroyed the jobs. Jobs were a plenty when Bush was president until the Democrats took over, then everything went downhill. Another example of a democrat pointing a finger at the other guys.
I have never received welfare, food-stamps, social security, medicare, or anything free from the government...but I am still voting for OBAMA!!!!! TAKE THAT!!!!!
Why tell us? We already knew you were voting for.
Just to remind you in case you thought your lies about THE PRESIDENT would change my mind....
You can't change a one tracked mind. The only thing that would change your mind would be if by a freak of nature, Obama became a white person and Romney became black, then you would change your mind and vote for Romney.
No way....you are crazy
It takes a crazy person to know a crazy person, and you are one crazy deranged person.
CJ = Proof you can FOOL some of the sheeple some of the time.
Heres an idea, instead of raising my taxes to pay for this healthcare scam, since all the ppl who will benefit from it anyway dont have a job and still get thousands of dollars at income tax timw, how about they take a full year of obumma heathcare premiums right off the top of the income tax of the ppl who dont want to work and just want to be taken care of be the govvment. this way they are paying their own insurance and I dont have to do it for them!!!
That wouldn't fit in with there plan. .
No one really knows what Obamacare will shake out to be. It has some great provisions such as requiring insurance companies to cover students up to 26, removing pre-existing condition clauses and so-on. It's scary because it' government involvement. Medicare, veterans' healthcare and public health services while imperfect have worked fairly well in the USA. The part D of medicare is a boondoggle for bigpharma but that will be fixed over time. A major issue blocking the development of a good comprehensice health option is the extremist control in the two parties. The left want everything free and now. The rightist just want to grab all the money and run and they don't mind taking from the tax cofers or from the private wallets. Each extremist group has hijacked the respective parties. About 30 years ago Richard Nixon proposed to Ted Kennedy a solution for healthcare which basically was if the uninsured need health insurance let's just give them the money and let them buy it. The egotistical Kennedy was shocked and would have none of it as Nixon was his family's arch enemey. Jimmy Carter proposed universal health services through either private or public funding and again Kennedy refused because of his ego. Perhaps Kennedy wanted to have his imprimatur on the program. It was said that Kennedy regretted his opposition to the proposals to his dieing day. I some how doubt that he had that much self-reflection. The point being the political masters more often than not feed their egos rather than the sheep.
Sometimes the job is more important than the credit. Good post Mr. Tuk. You seem to understand more that just political ads.
The pre-existing condition part is great. I don't plan on getting insurance until I get hurt or come down with something, then I am going to go get insurance and they can't deny me. Does that really sound good to you?
You're correct, certain people fought Medicare when it was started, afraid of the end of the world. Ask them now if they would stop theirs. The Affordable Care Act will survive because we need it desperately for the entire healthcare system. Hospitals will continue he to collapse if there isn't a way to pay them for the care they must provide. Don't you want a hospital in your area? The US is the only industrialized country in the world without some kind of plan for their people. Yet 1/3 of us have no regular access to primary and specialty care. WeWe have the most expensive system in the world, with just mediocre health. Many people could go back to work, for want of a knee surgery, for example, but end up on diasability.
Americas health and the health care system will never improve as long as millions of people are allowed to sit on their butts all day eating fried chicken while watching premium cable on their big screen tv. It is a shame that a part of the money that is already being given away can't go toward paying for insurance. I guess the votes the dems bought last election are having to be bought again.
My company offered me early retirement. Catch was health care would cost me almost $1,800 a month to maintain what they supply for a lot less. Supporting Universal Health Care isn't a class or Race issue. It is already available to those unable to pay thru the Emergency Room visit. The ones that are between the cracks are the ones wanting and supporting it. I know many folks that have said if it weren't for healthcare, they would hang it up. This cost is what keeps folks working. Take away health insurance as an incentive, and you may lose many good workers out of the system. Once it is in place, these folks can go their own route and do what they have always wanted to do. Trust me, it will be only the good ones that do it, those folks industry needs, and can't easily replace. I just have to look at the number of retired friends that are still consulting, because the company they have worked for cannot find a suitable replacement. Yes folks, the younger generations lack the work ethic that keeps many businesses running. Just in case you hadn't noticed.
I have not been a supporter of Obamacare. I did not feel that taxpayers should be burdened by others who did not make healthy choices. I also agreed with your statement that care is available thru the emergency room for those who are unable to pay. Recently, a friend who has worked hard all of their life and hasn't ever taken a dime in welfare was diagnosed with stage 3 possibly stage 4 cancer. This friend is unable to pay for life saving cancer treatments. My friend will die because of the inability to pay, while big pharma controls who lives and who dies based on affordability. I don't have the answer as to how the system should be changed. I do think that it is unfair for someone to suffer and die because they do not have the financial means to get chemo.
Walt, if more people were able to retire that would open jobs for the people who need to work. Many times I have considered returning to the workforce but I thought there were others that needed the work more than I. Now I'm just too old. :-(
Sadly, fortunate for those who are able to retire have too many expenses to retire, the beach home, the boat, three cars, and one of the kids still living at home...............
Wasn't there welfare before Obama. You all act like he implemented welfare. How many years of free labor did they get off slaves? Dosent feel good to pay for what ur ancestors did!!!!!!!!!!
Laws were different back then. Nobody living today had anything to do with that. Obuma didn't implement welfare, only esculating it.
The economy caused the big increase. Remamber Merk? Remember Cooper Tire? That was just in our area. Almost every area in the country was hit. Some more than others. Without assistance many hard working families would go hungry.
Did you know that nationwide more white people are on welfare than black people?
And Obuma is doing his best to get more blacks on there to catch up and to pull ahead and I don't care about other states, My concern is too much welfare in this state, particularly here in Albany, Ga. We are in the top ten of the poorest cities in the U.S. Which tells me the other states are doing better regardless if more whites are on welfare or not.
JimBoob is right.......@VSU where do you get this crap you come up with??? Lay off the FOXNEWS and drugs man....thats a bad combo....
CJ I think you are the one who needs to lay off the drugs. VSU is right Albany is in the top ten of poorest cities in the nation. This very newspaper had a report on it. I guess it's hard for you to keep up with the news laying in the gutter with that whiskey bottle in your hand. Obviously the only thing you can read are the labels on the bottles.
That's true for 3 reasons. 1) There are more white people than black people, but if you narrowed it down per capita, the numbers would be more closer. 2) A lot of white people on welfare are mentally & Physically disabled and couldn't work if they wanted to, but are not there just looking for a free handout because they are sorry and lazy. 3) A lot of whites on welfare is nothing more than white trash that gets pregnant by yo black brothers. Welfare recipiants in this city and state don't get welfare because they are disabled, but because they are sorry, lazy and just want to hold their hands out for something free.
Yesterday is not today or the future....
So please do not continue to be confused.
The US is the only place where access to healthcare is for most people tied specifically to their employer. Ridiculous system, originated when wage controls first led companies to offer insurance as a benefit. Happy, the scenario is common to many serious illnesses and it's not just our personal friends who should be able to live. Right, Christians? Walt, you could not retire when you wanted to due to unaffordable insurance?! That would make me a supporter of the Affordable Care Act. The argument about the decline of civilisation is an old, but different one.
I don't know about "republicans," but if I had my way I know we wouldn't have social security. Any individual would be thrown in jail in a heartbeat for trying to pull off a scam like social security.
What has Obuma done for the US lately? He has put us at least $5 trillion deeper in debt, capsized the American healthcare industry, continues to put a greater burden on middle income tax payers and threw away nearly a trillion in stimulus his first year in office. Obuma has not even had a budget in any of his years in office and it shows. He spends like a drunken sailor and at the same time he offers no real solutions, because when it comes to the economy, the man either is driving us deeper in debt on purpose or is a complete moron. I think both fit him.
Sad thing is most of the Albany Herald bloggers would benifit from the new health care law but publicly hate the law because THIS president supports it.
Happy.......in reference to the earlier comment about your friend who has the Stage 4 cancer and that there is probably no hope for the friend because of the inablility to pay for treatment. I had a friend when my husband was in the Air Force and we were stationed in Warner Robins and she was a very kind and loving person and she too found herself caught in the position your friend was caught up in. She had tried every avenue she could to get help and came to the end of her rope and in last desperate attempt she wrote a Letter to the Editor of a local newspaper and to a larger one in a larger city, and to women's magazines, telling of her plight and how she felt frustration because of the things she saw going on around her. She said in her letter how she would go to the ER and see women come in with Medicaid (welfare) cards (gold cards they were called because they were a gold color and the women got unlimited access to free medical care) and were in the ER for a headache...which infuriated Patsy. She got no help at all. So in her letter to the newspapers and the magazines she let her anger and frustrations spill out and said...."if I were some half black, Hispanic, Puerto Rican whore with 8 or 9 bastard kids I bet you people would break your necks to help me, huh? Food stamps, subsidized housing, everything." (I remember she covered it all and she was far from a racist but she was angry.) We were shocked that some of the places actually printed the letter but most of them used *** in place of some of the words. I used to feel her frustration. There were a lot of follow up replies in the Letters to the Editors section of the newspaper after she wrote that. A lot of people called her a racist and maybe she was but she brought to their attention the fact that health care is doled out so unfairly in this country. She was a prime example. The new health care law will not affect me so I have no complaints either way. But I can understand the frustrations most of you feel. She died not long after she sent the letter, in October, and I am so glad it was a beautiful day and not gloomy and cold.
