The Albany Herald's Georgia Press Association winners
ALBANY -- Journalists with The Albany Herald were honored by the Georgia Press Association Saturday evening with the announcement of 10 awards for work published in the paper during 2011.
Herald staffers received four first place awards, three second place honors and three third-place awards.
Carlton Fletcher won a first place award for his business coverage, which included stories regarding Cooper Tire Co. and Dougherty's pecan crop. Fletcher is metro editor of The Herald and a columnist.
Herald reporter Jennifer Parks received a first-place award in the community service category for her series on bullying.
Editor Jim Hendricks and the editorial board won placed first in editorial writing category. Also, The Herald's editorial page was cited with a first-place finish in the editorial page category.
The Herald's sports staff received a second-place award in sports writing. Staff members include Danny Aller, Mike Phillips and John Millikan.
The Herald also won awards in judging of the newspaper's appearance. The Herald placed third in the layout and design category and second in the Page One judging.
Hendricks won third place in the humorous column category. His winning entries were about snakes, Christmas and mixing art and birthing.
J.D. Sumner, the Herald's governmental reporter and photographer, placed second in the sports feature photo competition. His winning entry was tagged Triple Jump.
Photographer Joe Bellacomo placed third in the sports feature category. His winning entry was tagged Albany Celebrates.
This year's annual convention was conducted at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Florida. Press associations from Florida, Alabama and Mississippi also combined for the regional convention.
