ELON -- Mrs. Joan A. Phillips, 83, of Mill Point Way, Elon died at Alamance Regional Medical Center on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11:36 p.m. following a brief illness.

A native of Lynchburg, VA, she was the wife of Raymond B. Phillips, who survives and the daughter of Jesse B. Abbitt and Ethel Newcomb Abbitt, both deceased. She was a registered nurse and a member of Front Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include two daughters, Susan P. Marty of Orlando, FL and Joan Elizabeth "Beth" Phillips of Elon; two sons, Robert Bernard Phillips of Savannah, GA and Darryl Ray Phillips and wife, Diane, of New Iberia, LA; two sisters, Betty Holland and Barbara A. Watts and husband, George; a brother, Bob Abbitt and wife, Tena; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Phillips graduated from Lynchburg Hospital School of Nursing on September 10, 1948 and married her husband of 63 years on the same day. In addition to raising four children, she continued her nursing career which opened many doors to do and see lots of great things. This includes missionary work in the southern tip of India with First United Methodist Church, Albany, GA. She served as the first Nursing Coordinator for the Albany, GA Community Hospice. She enjoyed helping sick friends and neighbors.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. by Rev. Marshall Old with the family receiving friends following the service at the funeral home.
