Darton women’s basketball coach Lea Henry, seen here talking with her players, will hold two youth basketball camps this summer in Albany.
ALBANY - Lea Henry kept coming back to Albany to teach basketball fundamentals even when her coaching career took her away.
The drive for Henry to her 2012 Basketball Camp of Champs in southwest Georgia is a lot shorter now, but the goal is the same.
“We live here again, but I always came back and did it every year to give back to the local area and make sure the kids were exposed to basketball,” said Henry, who returned to coach Darton College this season and led the Lady Cavs to a successful run into the postseason.
Henry will hold two annual area basketball camps for the 27th year after a stellar playing career at the University of Tennessee and as head coach at Division I Georgia State.
Henry opens summer camp Tuesday at Deerfield Windsor and will run it through Friday with several local coaches and instructors.
“We’ve got two gyms there and it’s nice,” Henry said of the facilities at Deerfield, one of which is named after her father, former DWS headmaster W.T. Henry. “It’s a good week and the kids have a lot of fun.”
The Lea Henry 2012 Basketball Camp of Champs is for youth ages 5-18 and will include a wide variety of basketball fundamental teachings and team scrimmages. Henry said her camps usually bring in 80-120 kids that are broken down into age and gender groups.
“It’s all based on the age group,” Henry said. “As your stations rotate, we make sure the little kids are having fun and just introduce them to the game. The older kids are doing drills that are age appropriate.”
Henry will be joined by her husband, Greg Manning, who also teaches character education basketball camps year round. Henry and Manning combine to do about 60 camps all over the country each year.
The second of Henry’s camps will by July 23-26 at Darton College with the help of her current Lady Cavs players. Space is available at both camps and registration info can be obtained by calling (404) 556-2302.
