Webster's New World College Dictionary defines the word respite as "an interval of temporary relief or rest, as from pain, work, duty. etc." Caregivers of those suffering from the horrible disease called Alzheimer's experience pain, work and duty, often around the clock. In Albany there is a place of respite, a safe haven for both the patient and the caregiver. The Alzheimer's Outreach Center, started in 1988, offers a program known as Alzheimer's Caregiver Time Out (ACTO). The day care program operates 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. In home respite care is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., also Mondays through Fridays. While the caregiver shops, goes to the doctor, visits friends and family, or simply rests, he or she can do so knowing ACTO is providing for the needs of their loved one. While no price tag can fully cover the value of this service, there is one. The daily fee for the day care program is $2.50, which pays for the food.
Congratulations once again to the Albany Panthers. The team captured its second consecutive championship in front of a crowd of more than 6,000 at the Albany Civic Center on the last day of June. The Panthers seized the title in the Professional Indoor Football League with a 60-56 win over The Richmond (Va.) Raiders.
It has been several months since runners took to the streets for the 2012 Albany Marathon. Despite rain, 1,716 runners laced up and hit the pavement. Such a success led to a greater donation for the event's beneficiary, the Willson Hospice House. A check was recently presented to the hospice facility in the amount of $25,000, up $5,000 from 2011. There is not a sane person who will call the event anything but successful. One stat alone will serve to prove the point ... six years ago there were a mere 491 participants.
People and places celebrated our nation's independence with parades, parties, hot-dogs, ribs, watermelon, games and the list goes on. Locally, the Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany was generous enough to open its gates for the 18th year to host a community-wide celebration on June 29. Sherwood Baptist Church hosted the community at Legacy Park on July 1 for its 8th annual Freedom Fest. There were vendors of all sorts and activities for the entire family at both locations. At the end of both evenings, the crowds were treated to a much-anticipated fireworks show. Thank you to MCLB-Albany and to SBC for two great celebrations of America's Independence Day.
For Lee Countians and all Southwest Georgians, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game for 2012 will be the most memorable one yet. Tomorrow night, starting with the 7:30 p.m. pregame show, American Idol Phillip Phillips will perform. Luke Bryan, winner of the 2012 CMT male video of the year, will sing the national anthem. And San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, after receiving more than 7.6 million fan votes, will start the game behind the plate. It just doesn't get much better than this!
