ALBANY — A beating and reported shooting were among the incidents the Albany Police Department are currently investigating, reports show.
The APD responded to 1511 Cordell Ave. amid reports of an aggravated assault and burglary incident at 3:50 a.m. Sunday.
The victim in the case, identified as William Stephens, had a facial wound to his left cheek area. The victim stated that a group of six black males forced their way into to his house, and as he was running away, one of the men shot him in the face.
He was treated by emergency medical personnel and transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, APD officials said. A hospital spokeswoman said Monday afternoon that Stephens had been discharged from Phoebe’s emergency center.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The victim further stated that he believes the suspects were trying to get his $500,000 scratch off lottery ticket that he bought and won on the Fourth of July, police officials said.
Meanwhile, two arrests were made in connection to a separate aggravated assault, police said.
Antwon Smith and Shanard Smith, both 21 and not related, have been charged with burglary, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime following an incident that unfolded at 2609 Gilllionville Road, the site of Glen Arm Manor Apartments.
Police reports show that officers responded to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital at 3:36 a.m. Sunday in reference to a person who had been assaulted. Upon their arrival they made contact with the victim, identified as Casey Washington, who stated that — while he was at his cousin’s apartment — someone knocked on the door, and when he opened it up, an unknown black male pointed a gun at him.
The victim stated that he attempted to run, but two other black males grabbed him and started to punch and kick him in the head. The victim sustained head and facial injuries from the beating, police officials say.
A spokeswoman from Phoebe said Monday afternoon that Washington had been discharged from the hospital’s emergency center.
Shanard Smith was arrested at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, while Antwon Smith was apprehended a few hours later, police officials say.
The case remains under investigation.
