ALBANY — American Legion Post 182 beat Post 30, 5-1, on Tuesday night to clinch the No. 1 seed in South Georgia.
Brent Kyzar was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and gave up one run on five hits while striking out seven.
Post 182 will be the No. 1 seed from the south in the four-day state tournament in Logansville, which begins July 27. Post 30 will be the No. 2 seed from the south.
Griffin honored
STATESBORO — Former Lee County star Chase Griffin was named a First-Team Freshman All-American catcher by Perfect Game on Tuesday.
This is the fourth such honor for Griffin, who hit.320 with 10 doubles and 10 home runs in 2012 for Georgia Southern. Griffin previously received the same such honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
The freshman catcher got off to a slow start and was hitting just .152 with one long ball in the first 17 games before breaking out for three hits and four RBI on March 17. Griffin went on to hit a team-best .413 with nine home runs and 24 RBI over the next 21 games.
Youth league kids headed for World Series tournament
ALBANY — Four youth baseball players from the 8th Avenue League have been chosen to play on the Thomasville Diamond Kings Under-8 and Under-9 baseball teams in the Baseball Nation Ultimate World Series tournament in Pensacola, Fla., which begins today and runs through Sunday.
Alexander Ingram, a shortstop and third baseman, and Anthony White, a first baseman, have been chosen to play for the Under-8 team, and Ardis Pickett III, a shortstop, and Jordan Buchannan, a second baseman, have been chosen to play for the Diamond Kings Under-9 team.
The Albany kids were selected after emerging as the top players in the 8th Avenue League.
