Police and management assure security at the local Carmike Wynnsong 16 after a mass killing at a Colorado theater.

ALBANY, Ga. — Murders at a Colorado theater showing the latest Batman movie prompted a police message on local movie security Friday.

In addition to normal beat patrols, the Albany Police Department regularly provides uniformed, armed security staff to the Carmike Wynnsong Cinemas. The off-duty officers are paid by the theater’s management.

“We have officers employed at Wynnsong; we have had training in dealing with an active shooter,” said Detective Charlie Roberts. “We have the training and ability to assess the situation and react accordingly.”

Associated Press reports from Aurora, Colo., said that a gunman, probably working alone, made his way into a theater through an exit during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” and killed 12 in the audience while injuring at least 50.

In the past, people have tried to enter Wynnsong theaters at 2823 Nottingham Way through side exits without paying. Officers stand ready for that tactic.

“We watch for that,” Roberts said. “We are mindful of that, and we are ready for that.”

The local theater’s management issued a statement: “The Carmike Cinemas family is saddened by the senseless shooting of theater guests at the Century 16 in Aurora, Colorado. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ families and community bearing this great grief.

“At Carmike Cinemas, our theater teams are trained in standard security procedures and employ on a daily basis a wide variety of those measures at our complexes across the country. Many of the security procedures are visible and others not in the sight of our guests. Uniformed law enforcement officers and plainclothes agents are routinely used. We pride ourselves in taking every reasonable measure to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all of our guests.”

Asked about the number and placement of officers at the Wynnsong Friday night, Roberts replied, “It is a good night to see a movie.”

Would you please get more details from Carmike Cinemas as to their criteria for, "standard security procedures that they employ on a daily basis a wide variety of those measures at our complexes?" It is my understanding they are now wanding folks and searching purses. Not that I disagree, I am just curious as to our rights as citizens. What do we have the "rights" to carry in? If Bubba has a concealed weapon license, will he be allowed to bring in his pistol? If Sally Sue has a personal protection device such as a tear-gas shot, will she be allowed to bring it in? For that matter, and I know it is small, but if there is a pack of gum "concealed" within my purse, do they have the right to make me throw it away?
