ALBANY -- While attempting to make a comment about keeping the city's aviation board diverse, Ward VI Commissioner Tommie Postell sparked a racially-charged conversation during this week's Albany City Commission meeting.
City Commissioners tenatively voted to approve the recommendation of the aviation board to reappoint Keith Fletcher to fill a vacancy left in the wake of the death of board member Eugene Jeter with Dr. Frank Middleton.
Postell said he took issue with the recommendation to appoint Middleton, who is white, because he believes Jeter, who was black, should be replaced by another African-American.
"I would like to see a black replace that black member," Postell said. "I don't want to see no Utopia where the board is all white males. ... It sounds like the good old boy system to me, and we need to end that."
Postell asked Yvette Aehle, the director of the Southwest Georgia Regional Airport, why Henry Davis, a black man, wasn't considered for the position while Middleton was.
"Mr. Middleton is a pilot who ..." Aehle said, before being cut off by Postell.
"I don't care if they can fly. I want to know why Henry Davis wasn't considered," Postell said.
Mayor Pro Tem and Ward V Commissioner Bob Langstaff, who sits as the City Commission's representative on the aviation board, answered, saying that Davis didn't submit a letter of intent or resume and that the board only considered two new applicants: Middleton and former City Commissioner Henry Mathis.
"I don't have anything against Dr. Middleton, I just don't want to overload (the aviation board) with Caucasians just like I wouldn't want to overload it with blacks. It needs to be a diverse board," Postell said.
Ward IV Commissioner Roger Marietta defended Middleton and called Postell out on his comments.
"I think he's a good candidate, and I think it's inappropriate to dwell on the race of the applicant. In a way, I sympathize with Commissioner Postell. If he feels African-Americans should be better represented on the board, then he should encourage someone to apply when there is a vacancy," Marietta said.
"Point of reference: I did, and your comments are out of order," Postell returned.
The vote won't be official until Tuesday's night meeting.

If you don't apply or submit a resume chances are you are not gonna get picked, why should a person be appointed a position they didn't apply for? Postel was talking out of both sides of his mouth. On one side he said they need to end the Good ol boy system yet on the other side that is the one reason he wanted Davis on the board because he was a part of his good ol boy network.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other, but why does a black man have to be in there, Why couldn't it simply be the best candidate for that spot regardless whether he is black, white, yellow or crystal clear? Mr. Postel's Boi didn't submit for the job so why should he be picked?

Also, if someone did not apply for the appointment, chances are he didn't want it to begin with. Tommy Postell needs to hush...and get his racist African-American brain into the 21st century. Tommy Postell won't be happy until every position in this city is filled by a black person. The board should reflect the community it serves, what is the make up of the community it serves? Find the answer, and I rest my case.

First point......Mr. Postell....you are a hypocrite and incompetent....I have no problem having black people in certain positions as long as they apply and are qualified....but I have noticed the qualifications of black people when applying for certain positions seems to be less rigorous than for white people and others...as for the good ole boy comment...he should know ...he advocates and participates in the process of putting INCOMPETENT, UNQUALIFIED BLACK FOLKS IN CERTAIN POSITIONS...take a look at our BLACK city officials and MOSTLY BLACK SCHOOL BOARD(this is good ole boy as it gets)...they wanted to be elected to these positions and look at how they run things....so glad I am outta here...just wait...the mass exodus of TAXPAYING, EMPLOYED CITIZENS WILL CONTINUE AND YOU WILL HAVE NOTHING...COULD NOT HAPPEN TO A NICER CROWD...

As a philosophical idea yes but Not at any cost. “The leaders has to keep diversity alive” Because on it’s own, forced diversity will not survive. “We want diversity and to be included”. What you really desire is to be treated as a man of equal standing in society. To be treated as an equal you must learn to conduct yourself as an equal. The current path used to reduce society down to your standard is only successful in lowering society’s standards and has done nothing to increase your standings in society. As a honest human being you cannot seriously support anyone regardless of color for lying, cheating and stealing from anyone, the government their next door neighbor or from someone across town. Postell did nothing but fan the flames of racism in Albany by his conduct and claims of he wants Blacks on the board regardless if they applied or are the best qualified. He would have done a better service to Black Albany by taking the time to denounce Black Albany for NOT getting involved and to stop relying on others to be involved in Albany. BTW I know Postell and have supported him in public and even on here in the past but this attempt by him to inflame the public both black and white is old school politics and has no place in Albany if people want to seriously move ahead of racism.

Yes I do and the one that I am most proud of is the one that I use to get $2.500.oo from the state of Ga to give as a scholarship to a private school for a student that can't afford private school but sincerely wants the best education he/she can get in DoCo. I have posted this before and if anyone else would like FREE MONEY from the State of Ga. Drop me a email and I will give you the information on how to get $2,500.oo of your TAX money back from Ga. To pay for scholarships so any student in Georgia can attend the private K-12 schools of their parents’ choice, you can even use it if your kids are already attending private school. I didn't know they did that. A Mitchell Co. farmer helped my stepson go to a private school at the high school level. He made it through college mostly on his own. We did provide him a decent car & insurance. He teaches school now in Lee Co.

Diversity for diversity's sake is a step back. A position should be filled with the best qualified person. If that creates diversity good. However, in the name of diversity it has gone from the best qualified, to are they in the least bit qualified for the position. This does not make for the best results possible. However it has created the opinion that promotions based solely on race are unearned, and the individual is carried in the name of diversity by the Company. This hurts all concerned. If you were a prospector for a Company looking for a location, how would you take the Commisioner's comments? As a positive or a negative. What would you think of the intelligance of the elected official wanting the position to go to a Minority, when no Minority applied for the opening? Would you be suprised if that Prospector scratched Alabny off of their list? Wow, I thought with all these comments that there would be an intelligent discussion about the role that race still plays in Albany's every day life. Most of these posts are from a few that continue to sling dirt back and forth, while getting away from the subject at hand.
Qualifications should trump race every time. It's funny that I've never seen any other board debated like this. Most of the time, it's difficult to get people who want to participate on these boards. Since the Aviation Commission seems to be in high demand, that should further the qualifications argument. If 5 people are competing for 2 jobs, don't you pick the most qualified, or have I fallen into Alice in Wonderland's hole?

HELLO HELLO.......if anyone should see that fellow, I think his name was Hawk something, who called me a racist, would you please direct him to Tommyboy Postell's racist comment about having a white person on the board. If that ain't racist I don't know what is and I don't ever recall my making such an outlandish racist statement. Thank you very much. What does race have to do with anything? Postell nothing more than a stupid, racist, white-hating bigot who has no business in politics. The best candidates for this board are those who have experience flying in and out of similar airports as pilots and who understand the issues faced by municipal airports.

EXCUSE ME......(clears throat and brushes off soapbox as I step up on it to address the crowd)....I wonder if Tommieboy realizes that the stupid comment he made about wanting another AFRICAN-AMERICAN on the board (snicker snicker chortle chortle) means that it does not necessarily mean a BLACK person. Why does Tommyboi assume that an AFRICAN-AMERICAN is BLACK......?? Once again snicker snicker chortle chortle (<laughter for those of you who don't understand). If he so desires to have an AFRICAN-AMERICAN on the board I suggest he ask someone born in Africa of American parentage to be on the board...oh I don't know...hmmm..maybe a WHITE person who just happens to have been born there. Where does the idiot get the idea of AFRICAN-AMERICAN being only for blacks. AFRICAN-AMERICANS are people like DAVE MATTHEWS of the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND who was born in SOUTH AFRICA to WHITE AMERICA parents and is a TRUE AFRICAN-AMERICAN so Tommieboi...get over it. LOOK it up Tommieboy......they are true AFRICAN-AMERICANS...not you..you are no more an AFRICAN-AMERICAN than the man you want to be on the board. Just curious Bubba...where did you get your information regarding that 99%? Please give us that link, so we can investigate this information. As far as representing the community...keep on letting these folks represent you and your cronies..and there will not be one taxpayer left in the city...and you can have your ghetto life city...hahaha....thugs, commissioners and all...I can't wait..hahaha!!! As for your comment regarding the fireworks incident....the same goes for the WHITE community...we are not defined by incidents..because there are rarely any incidents involving WHITE FOLKS committing crimes of that nature....
