I met Ms Ride at a press function at UCSD in 1992 and asked two questions. The first was if work in the physics department had improved the function of free electron lasers; something recently touted in American Scientific magazine. She gave me a steely look and refused to say anything. I quickly asked if the "Star Wars" program, funded by President Reagan, long out of office, but still providing development funds to UCSD, would ever come to fruition. Ms Ride went on a minutes long diatribe about how nobody was anywhere near achieving that level of technology and said if we spent twice what we had to date we still wouldn't succeed. It's 20 years later now and we don't have Star Wars capability.. She was right, but that was not a politically correct thing to say to a DoD journalist at the time. Ms Ride was a true scientist. She spoke her mind. She will be missed.

Yes, but they kept on spending our money with no remorse. Her too. That is the problem with this country. Wild goose chases all over USA at taxpayers expense. She was a wonderful person and a good role model to all, not just females.

The Blues Image had a song called "Ride Captain Ride" back in the '70's with the lyric "Ride captain ride/upon your mystery ship". Later sometime in the early to mid-80's, someone did a cover of the original with the lyric changed to "Ride Sally Ride" in honor of Sally Ride being the first American Woman in space. I'm still trying to find out who did the cover, but the song was definitely based on "Ride Captain Ride" and I still remember it to this day.
