City commission tabs Chehaw, aviation members

ALBANY — The Albany City Commission made a handful of appointments to some of its volunteer boards this week, but tabled a controversial appointment to the aviation board.

City Commissioners unanimously approved the reappointment of Keith Fletcher to the Aviation Commission, and those of Brad Halford and Mathew Inman to the Chehaw Park Authority.

The commission unanimously approved two new appointments. Jaylynne “Bee” Byrum and Ashok Jain were each named to the Chehaw Park Authority to fill vacant positions left by members whose terms expired.

But the commission opted not to fill a position that prompted some controversial comments from Ward VI Commissioner Tommie Postell during the commission’s work session earlier this month.

In discussing the remaining vacancy on the aviation board, Postell expressed concern over the suggested appointment of Dr. Frank Middleton by the aviation commission, saying that he “would like to see a black replace (Eugene Jeter, who is African American).

Postell said he was concerned that adding Middleton, who is white, to the board would hinder the diversity of the board.

“I don’t want to see no Utopia where the board is all white males. ... It sounds like the good old boy system to me, and we need to end that,” Postell said.

At the work session, Postell said that one of his constituents, Henry Davis, had expressed interest in the position and was planning to submit a resume, but the deadline for applications had passed.

Tuesday, as the City Commission again considered an appointment to fill Jeter’s seat, Postell motioned to table discussion “until the Aviation Commission can review any new resumes or applicants and come back with a recommendation.”

Ward II Commissioner Ivey Hines seconded Postell’s motion, which then passed 4-3, with Mayor Pro-Tem and Ward V Commissioner Bob Langstaff, Ward IV Commissioner Roger Marietta and Ward III Commissioner Christopher Pike voting against the motion to table.

So in other words, deadlines don't mean doodlysquat for black folks? Is that the message we are to infer from Captain Racist, er Commissioner Postell? You just simply can't fix stupid.

I think Postell wants to go to a "good old bros" board vice the "good old boys". While I agree with the "good" part and perhaps even the "old" part, the ethnic cleansing part is rather racist, Tommie. A case of a black calling a pot a kettle I guess.

This is absolutely unreal. A deadline is a deadline. If there were no more resumes in house as of the meeting time, then Middleton should have gotten the position. I cannot believe the commission allowed this to happen.

Corruption at it's finest! That really isn't fair to Middleton and Mathis to allow someone to apply when the deadline has already past. McKinney would have served her constituents much better if she was elected. I hope Middleton and Mathis slap a lawsuit on them.

Postell is a racist. He does not want Middleton on the board solely due to his skin color. He is willing to circumvent the deadline, in order to get his racist way. How hateful. And the shame is that, Dr. Middleton is an avid aviation enthusiast and a genuinely fine person.

I wish BVR would come on here and preach to us some more about the hidden agenda thingamabob. You can bet your last dollar that if a white commissioner had been stupid enough to say we needed another white man on the board, CNN, MSNBC, and HLN would have been down here like stink on poop to watch Jesse and Al lead marches and protests.

Agree. Now we need to hear from mayor Hubbard to condemn the racist remarks by her City Commissioner Tommy Postell. If not, then there is your hidden agenda.

Postell is the reason the city of Albany will never become what it could be with intelligent leadership.

Don't you get it? The overall "agenda" is to have 100% blacks on all commissions, committees, department heads and underling employees. Then the official name can be changed from ALbany to Blackbany.

The saddest thing about this whole mess is the idiots that voted these morons (Tommyboy, et al) in to office have not the slightest idea what is going on in the city government. They did what they were told and now sit at home and watch reruns on TV every night of some stupid show and could not care less what is going on in the city.
