DCSS nutritionist quits

ALBANY — Dougherty County School Child Nutrition Services Director Vanessa Hayes has tendered her resignation.

A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Albany Herald on Friday that Hayes turned in her resignation early Friday afternoon “to pursue a better job opportunity.”

Hayes’ contract was not renewed in May following a motion by School Board member Velvet Riggins, who had been indicted by a Dougherty County grand jury on charges that she had fruadulently obtained free or reduced-cost school lunches for her children.

In a surprise move in late June, Hayes was offered a new contract. Board member David Maschke made the motion to reconsider Hayes’ non-renewal, and she was returned to her position on a 4-2 vote, with Riggins abstaining.

Good for her. Ms. Hayes has done more for Child Nutrition in the Dougherty County Schools than most will ever know. She has been recognized in the state and nationally for her innovative programs. She has increased student participation in breakfast and lunch through better meals and better service. Think what you want, she is someone that truly cares about the wellbeing of the children in this county, unlike the sol called "leaders" of the school system. Instead of standing behind her and applauding her efforts, the board tried to eliminate her because they viewed her as a threat.

This is too funny. Vaya Con Dios, Ms. Hayes. In your new position.....if anybody tells you to do something that is illegal, unethical, or makes you feel like it's something shady.....don't do it!

As Homey the Clown says "What, if anything, have we learned from this, boys and girls?"
