Squawk of the Day - July 28, 2012

The federal government spent $39 billion in 2008 on food stamps. Since President Obama took office, this program has doubled in size and this year the expected total is $83 billion. When is enough enough?

As far as welfare recipients and those overweight food stamp abusers are concerned, it's never enough.

I am finally being persuaded that Obama's goal is to place this country so far into debt AND with other spending commitments (food stamps, health care, etc etc) that the USA will NEVER be able to recover no matter what. Then comes what? I am beginning to believe that's what He meant when He said He wanted to change America forever.

Perhaps if the jobs were not outsourced, Americans would still be working and not on assistance. This is NOT Obama's fault. The President's office just does not have that executive power; it just doesn't. That's how the US Constitution is set up so that the office does not have that power.

From the USDA, these are all of the FOOD STAMP programs: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)--49% are CHILDREN!! National School Lunch Program (NSLP) School Breakfast Program (SBP) Special Milk Program (SMP) Summer Food Service Program(SFSP) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) Food Assistance for Disaster Relief (FADR) Nutrition Assistance Block Grants, including Nutrition Assistance for Puerto Rico Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)

So a family of 4 (2 parents, 2 kids) who have been used to being employed at Cooper are now receiving assistance. The folks at Merck- on assistance, Bob's, Mars, the list goes on and on.

Is there fraud? Of course, but that is not the reason for the increase. Literally millions of workers who lost jobs that were outsourced are now on the dole.

Perhaps we should require that 80 % of any product be manufactured in the US; the flipping US Olympics uniforms were made in China!!!

I am not an Obama supporter nor will I vote for him in November but you have a good point erudite. The squawk gives a number from 2008 and compares that to today. You have to ask yourself what changed and the answer obviously is that we are in the worst economic conditions since the great depression brought on by greed. Because of the businesses that have gone under or moved more jobs overseas you have more people needing to use the welfare system to survive. I would be in support of requiring 80% of an American companies job base to be located in the US or face a penalty tax equal to 70% of any profits made overseas to be used for the support of the welfare system. Some of you may argue that is not fair but think about this....if those jobs were here in the US and not overseas how many unemployed people would you have and how much easier would it be to force the people who are taking advantage of the system off welfare because the jobs are available to them? I personally think it is Un-American to send jobs overseas when you have so many families and people who need the jobs here in the US. Especially when the only reason for doing it is greed.

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

But where are those millions and millions of jobs Obuma said he created or was going to create?

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

Still waiting for the trickle down economics from Reagan. And rebounding from 'no new taxes' from Bush 1, oh, and paying Halliburton/Cheney for businesses in Iraq and the Welfare to Work program from Clinton. (All of those people had to go to work somewhere, you know; voters were demanding welfare reform, remember?)

Sadly, the jobs being created are service sector jobs--do you want fries with that--that do not pay enough for families to survive without assistance on some level. If both parents have to work, who watches the kids? And don't say, 'don't have kids' as that is part of the American dream--2 kids, a house, white fence, and a dog-- right? So they split the shifts, so now people complain that the parent is absent.

No president delivers all the promises; Obama promised to get us out of Iraq, he did; promised to get bin Laden, he did. Let's be thankful those happened.

2

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

Not to mention the Nafta bill signed by Bill Clinton that allowed for several jobs to go overseas. We would have been out of irag regardless who the president was. In fact Obuma was slow gettingt them out. As far as getting Bin Ladin, he just happened to be the president at the time. Mickey Mouse could have been president and still would have gotten Bin Ladin. You know the old saying about just being in the right place at the right time. It's not like Obuma single handedly went in there and found him and got rid of him.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

Um, NAFTA stands for North American Free Trade Act...no "overseas". The act is concerned with Canada and Mexico. The country is Iraq, not Irag...bin Laden not Ladin...does your VSU equal Valdosta State University?

Did Bush 2 go and get Saddam himself? No, so why do people give him the credit?

1

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

That's "Did Bush go" not "Did Bush 2 go". Can we say ASU?

No, Bush didn't get Saddam himself, but the difference is, Bush gave the orders for troops to go in. The war and the search for Laden was already in place, started by Bush. Obama, excuse me, I meant Obuma just happened to be president, but Laden would eventually be caught no matter who the president was.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

No, Bush 2 is GWB, not GHWB--he's Bush 1. I have never, nor will I ever, enroll in a southern school. I would like my teachers to speak American Standard English as 'might coulda', 'might can', and 'fixin' ta' send shivers down my spine.

So, if these events would have happened regardless of the Commander in Chief, why can't you accept that the current economic situation would have happened no matter who was in office?

And you are absolutely correct: BUSH STARTED THE WAR!!!

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

Just like the democrats get upset because people blame Obama for the gas prices, when the fact is, when bush was president the democrats blamed him for the gas prices. Hypocrisy at it's best. They critcised Bush for spending money and Obuma is spending it like it is going out of style, but the democrats seem to have no problem with that, more hypocrisy.

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

Come on now, you know each side is riddled with hypocrites and hypocrisy; I believe such is required in the game called politics.

We blamed Nixon for the gas prices in 1973, Carter in 1976-1980...Reagan...No ONE is too blame!!

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

I don't deny that, but I take exception to them ridiculing Bush for gas prices and then they say presidents don't have anything to do with gas prices, which overall they don't, but yet when prices started dropping, suddenly the democrats were praising Obuma for the prices dropping. Hypocrits? BTW the prices went back up to $3.27 when for 1 brief day it dropped below $3.00.

The foodstamp prez, he's gotta take care of his useless liberal voting base. All those illegals he helping vote may not be enough.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

Do "illegals" wear a neon light or something? What is an 'illegal'? Can I be one? Would you know? Are you one? Oh, thou doth protest too much!!!

1

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

You don't know what an illegal alien is?

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

You missed the point. How can you tell someone is illegal until you ask for papers? Because the Herald does not ask for papers, we could all be illegal citizens!!!!!

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

I didn't miss anything. I think you missed bigbob's point. He didn't say anything about easily identifying an illegal alien, just that they were there.

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

How does BB know that Obama is helping 'illegals' to vote? How does he know who the 'illegals' are?

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

How do you know Obuma isn't? Obuma has closed several border control stations and has stopped deporting the illegal aliens. Hmmm! Sounds to me Obuma is helping the illegal aliens.

If we add penalties or requirements then companies will simply leave and go to other countries. So if we assume that jobs are outsourced then lets address the reasons why?

Taxes? Cheaper Labor? Import/Export costs? Regulations?

What's the difference between democracy, socialism and communism? What's ironic is that many of us love our country and democracy but decry the capitalism that has made us great.

I think we need to realize that times have changed. Labor Unions served a very significant purpose several years ago but now they force companies to make hard choices in order to survive. My father was a food worker who was paid almost $40/hr towards the end of his career to work the produce section of a major store. I love my Dad but the work he did wasn't worth $40/hr. Most of our countries original grocery chains are gone for this very reason and replaced by non-unionized chains and superstores like Walmart and Target. Would Walmart be able to employ 2 million people and add to our country's GDP if unions controlled their labor? Could we afford to shop there if the employees were all getting $20+ per hour? Consider also that my Dad makes more in retirement then he did when he was working full time. Again, I love him but social security was meant to keep retirees from being poor....not make them rich. His labor union took good care of him but put the business that he worked at for 40 years out of business.

In the end it's about economics. Company's go to other places where their businesses can survive and thrive. Do we want them to do that here or go overseas? Our solutions will need to recognize this.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

They HAVE gone to other countries. This vicious cycle includes manufacturing, assembly, 'help' desks, Wal-Mart and dollar stores of various names. Americans support the Chinese regime to the tune of 41 MILLION $ an hour. But that is what captialism is for, right. PROFIT!

You seem to be blaming the unions, the same people who brought you the 40 hour week, child labor laws, OSHA standards, to name a few.

Was there corruption that led to high wages, sure. Did you suffer b/c Dad was making money?

Perhaps, along with unions, capitalism needs refinement. There are few unions in GA so why did these businesses leave?

It is just getting started. I stated months ago, if we were not at war, the unemployment would be a lot high. There are over 200,000 going to be laid off by Thanksgiving. They are in defense contract business and must have a 45 day notice. It has already been given. Unemployment will go sky high since this war is winding down. The war was keeping us afloat. But I was behind a food stamp person and they had cases of bottled water and cases of bottled tea. Those should be eliminated. You can drink tap water and make you own tea. Soft drinks should and candy should go.

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

We need Bush back in office to start another war to save these jobs.

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

The military-industrial complex likes people like you.

1

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

I was being sarcastic e-rude-ite!

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

Oh good. We can't respect the veterans we have; let's not make new ones.

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

With that being said, Chinaberry is right. War does provide jobs, and a lot of people will lose theirs now that the wars are winding down. I am sure at some point, we'll end up in a war with Iran or North Korea.

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

And that will be the last war. Maybe we need that; return Earth to species that can take care of it and each other. Let Mother Nature rule.

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

The world will soom be coming to an end anyway, soon wars won't mean anything, there will be nobody left to fight them.

Make government assistance programs pay less than minimum wage. There are a lot of minimum wage jobs out there that people do not want because it does not pay as much as doing nothing. To those of you who are blaming everyone but Obama ( Bush, Chaney, Jesus, Mickey Mouse), I have one question for you. Is there anything he could do to make you vote for someone else? By the time he is finished, he will have raised the debt more than all past presidents combined. He will go down as the worst president in history (and no, it's not because he is black). President Carter is thanking god that Obama has come along and taken the title from him.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

It is not anyone's fault!! There is no single answer so there is no single person to blame; please understand that!! If there were, we would have NEVER landed in such a position. If one person were to blame for all of our issues, we would solve issues overnight.

The last time we solved something basically overnight, we nuked two cities. How did that pan out? Their auto and electronics industries soared causing competition the likes the US had never seen!

0

willie 1 year, 8 months ago

I could care less about all the past presidents except for George W. Bush as I think he has the "worst president" title all to himself.

0

VSU 1 year, 8 months ago

Past presidents indeed, but the current president "Obuma" has already passed Bush as worst president, so Obuma has that title all to himself.

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 8 months ago

The USDA is only ONE of many, many Federal Agencies that are providing "assistance". That's part of the problem......nobody has a handle on who's giving what, who's getting what, and how much it all adds up to.

0

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

True but the squawk is about food stamps.

We could investigate how many local farmers are being given assistance to stop growing certain crops in certain fields at certain times. We could investigate how many businesses are getting assistance for hiring TANF recipients. We could investigate how many car dealerships are getting assistance for unsold cars. We could see how much each county gets from the state per prisoner. We could investigate te assistance the hospital gets for treating the indigent.

There are MANY assistance programs out there, you are right about that.

ERud is proof It is easiest to control an uneducated population depending on their Master to support them. Er proves even a educated person may not be smart enough to think critically and logically. Or maybe that name is just a sick play on words. Drink your cool-aid.....Your Master will tell you what to think and say to support his cause. Change the subject, blame Bush, etc just don't let the light shine on your Master. Remember roaches must run from bright lights.

Jax 1 year, 8 months ago

Look, I don't always agree with erudite, but on this issue he/she seems to spread the blame around unlike most others on this site. We have to get away from the partisan politics and look at the complete picture. Both sides like to take money from one person and give it to someone else in order to buy votes. We have to get away from that style of government.

1

erudite 1 year, 8 months ago

And how do you figure that, taxpayer? No Master supports me; I support myself. I believe I typed Bush three times: once in an original post and twice in explanation to VSU.

And about what am I not thinking critically or logically? Please enlighten me.

I have advocated NOT blaming anyone because no ONE person is to fault. The drink is spelled Kool-Aid.
