ALBANY— Grand Island and Doublegate County Club tied for first place in the opening day of the 2012 Challenge Cup Golf Tournament, which pits Albany’s four golf courses against each other.

Grand Island Golf Club, Doublegate County Club, Stonebridge Country Club and this year’s host, River Pointe Golf Club, have been playing in this tournament for almost a decade. Doublegate is the defending champ.

Each golf club sends 12 golfers — 11 members and the club pro — to the tournament, and those 12 golfers are broken down into six two-man teams. The top four scores are posted.

Saturday’s first day of competition was a four-ball tournament, and Grand Island and Doublegate ended the day tied for first at 279. River Pointe was third at 282, and Stonebridge finished fourth at 290.

Today’s format changes, and the teams will compete in a scramble tournament with the top four scores being posted.
