Grand Island wins annual Challenge Cup title; defending champ Doublegate finishes second

ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor baseball coach Rod Murray and Georgia Southwestern golfer Nate Gahman — a former Herald Player of the Year from Lee County — teamed up to lead Grand Island to the annual Challenge Cup title as the two-day tournament finished up Sunday at River Pointe.

The Challenge Cup is a unique annual event that pits the Albany area’s four golf clubs against each other.

Grand Island finished first with a two-day total of 535. Defending champ Doublegate was second at 541. River Pointe was third at 548 and Stonebridge finished fourth with a total of 550.

The four local clubs each send 12 golfers, including the club pro, and the competition is broken down to six, two-man teams from each club. The top four scores are counted in the results.

The first round was a four-ball competition, and Sunday’s round was a scramble.

Murray and Gahman shot a 66 on Saturday and a 62 on Sunday to lead Grand Island. Doublegate was led by Lee Jamison and Craig Taylor, who fired back-to-back 64s. River Pointe was led by Will McDonald and Tim Carter, who shot a 69 on Saturday but came back with a 63 Sunday. Stonebridge was led by former Deerfield golfer and current UGA standout T.J. Mitchell and fellow former Deerfield star Ashton Pellicano, who opened with 68 and then shot the best round of the scramble Sunday, closing with a 61.
