ALBANY -- Following the advice of system attorney Tommy Coleman, the Dougherty County School Board on Tuesday voted 5-1 to re-issue contracts to five elementary teachers who were non-renewed during fallout from the CRCT investigation.
Rehired were Deborah Flood at Sylvester Road; Vanessa Dubose and Tia Ford at Northside; Lily Zachary at Jackson Heights and Deborah Warren at Alice Coachman.
At the end of the special called meeting to consider personnel prior to school starting on Aug. 6, Coleman told the board there wasn't enough evidence to move forward with the teachers cases.
"We believe there is insufficient evidence to present the cases of these five people to the tribunal in order to terminate or discipline them," said Coleman.
Darrel Ealum was the lone dissenting vote.
The system also filled three elementary principal positions.
Carrie Kirkland was named assistant principal at Westtown; Jaque Walker takes over as an AP Turner and Dave Walker was named interim principal at Morningside.
"We want to make sure we have all of our people in place when school opens, so I'm proposing new hires, temporary positions and return work positions tonight," said Superintendent Joshua Murfree.
In other action the board approved Ken Dyer as chief financial officer, replacing the demoted Robert Lloyd. The board also approved Blaine Allen as the temporary Child Nutrition Services director, replacing the departed Vanessa Hayes.
Murfree said that interviews for the Human Resources director's position would be completed by Aug. 2, and interviews to replace Dianne Daniels as curriculum director would begin on Aug. 7.

It's very clear that lawyers do not understand probabiliy and statistics.

Just curious, what is the penalty for a student who is caught cheating on a final exam in High School, and in College? Does that compare to only receiving 2 months suspension without pay for a TEACHER who should know better?

Open house is tomorrow night and I want to know why the schedules for all the middle and elememtary schools are not done yet AND why there are still vacant spot left open to fill? How is the school suppose to run like that?
Sister_Ruby 9 months, 3 weeks ago
Hey Coleman.......why not get one of the Math teachers at Darton to help you understand what you're looking at? One in FIFTEEN BILLION chance that there was NOT cheating is pretty clear evidence to me!!
bubbasmithredneck 9 months, 3 weeks ago
the so called "cheating" was not as bad as you guys blogging the herald made it out to be.....
Progressive 9 months, 3 weeks ago
I wonder how many others reacted the same way about Pres Bush going into Iraq due to the reported evidence of WMDs at that time turned out to be "not as bad" as reported.
Sister_Ruby 9 months, 3 weeks ago
I, unlike YOU, looked at the statistics in the report....classroom by classroom. So YES it was as bad......but Coleman and the DCSS Super Doctor know anything about statistics. They think buying a lottery ticket is a good bet but the odds of winning that are a LOT better than the odds that cheating did NOT take place. Make sense? It's complicated, I know, and you have to use your brain which causes sharp pains and bright flashes behind your eyelids.

Just attend the tribunals and see and hear the truth for yourself is all I can say. Then your whole attitude will change and you will realize why those teachers are getting there jobs back. The evidence is not sufficient.. Stop talking so much and SHOW UP!

The lawyer has the evidence.....he just doesn't know how to use it because it's higher math. Call in a statistics teacher from Darton. Then you will have plenty of evidence. And I mean plenty!!

Whose turn is it to ask, "what message is this sending to the kids?"
...like kids are paying attention to the investigation, hoping that justice will be served...like nothing else bad happens in the world that needs a parent's explanation...as if every verdict is "innocent" or "death penalty" with nothing in between.
These teachers have been placed on the same level as O.J. Simpson, by some...and please don't claim that teachers are held to a higher standard. Teachers can't teach without being second-guessed by students and their parents - teachers haven't been on a pedestal in 30+ years. If parents talked to their kids the way they talk to teachers when there's a failing grade involved, classroooms would be full of motivated students.
It's too bad that these teachers felt pressured into changing answers on a standardized test, but the students received grades from the school for "standards" covered in the cirriculum. An involved parent would know if a teacher was "giving" grades, and most importantly, if their child learned the material.

Why is the DCSS advertising on TV, with the bow-tied one speaking cheerfully about how ready the system is for school to start? That's a huge waste of money.

Putting bowtie #34 on TV was a wrong and very embarreseing moment for Albany? Stupid move!!
bubbasmithredneck 9 months, 3 weeks ago
just seems to me that all you guys rushed to judgement without all the facts and followed people like Sister Ruby and others for information. She was wrong. The tribunal has spoken.....Those teachers are headed back to work........
Sister_Ruby 9 months, 3 weeks ago
.........two months from now......without income between now and then. The lawyers have done all the talking......what have the teachers said? "I did nothing" or "Yes I cheated" ??

WHICH ONES? THE ONES LEAVING OR THE ONES STAYING?
MRKIA 9 months, 3 weeks ago
IF THE TEACHERS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE INNOCENT, THEN THEY SHOULD HAVE OPTED FOR THE FULL TRIBUNAL. THEY TOOK THE EQUIVALENT OF A PLEA DEAL AND THAT IS TECHNICALLY AN ADMISSION OF GUILT.
Bubbavet_rureel 9 months, 3 weeks ago
So the Gov should leave office? Your small minded idelologies are not worth stressing over. Learn the constitution light weight.

THE WORD IS IDEOLOGIES. SEE? I HELP THE HANDICAPPED ALSO.
MRKIA 9 months, 3 weeks ago
THE GOV ISN'T LEAVING OFFICE, BUT THE CHEATERS WILL BE LOSING THEIR JOBS. IF YOU WANT THE GOV OUT, HE HAS TO BE IMPEACHED. IT'S THAT "DUE PROCESS" THING YOU KEPT REMINDING EVERYONE ABOUT. HOW'S THAT WORKIN' FOR YA? AS SOON AS THE GOV DOES SOME CRCT CHEATING WE WILL BE ALL OVER HIM, UNTIL THEN WATCH YOUR MOUTH BEFORE I TAKE YOUR TONGUE AGAIN, CHUMP.
