ALBANY — Lauren Bailey said she and her husband Randy expect a lot more fun in their lives now that they’ve opened their new business, The Market Place.

The 10,000-square-foot building at 2602 Dawson Road brings together 25 vendors from three states, offering what Bailey calls antiques, collectibles, fashion and fun.

A “picker” herself for years, Lauren Bailey became a vendor just last January, building a craft shack in her backyard two months later, then opening the doors for business in a big way on Friday.

“When I get my mind set on something, I have tunnel vision,” Bailey said.

It isn’t as if the Baileys were looking for something to keep them occupied. Since 2009, they’ve owned three personal care homes, Lauren Bailey said, through the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, becoming certified last month. They plan to distribute their time between the two endeavors.

“This is not my primary job,” Lauren Bailey said. “I love people. I love making people happy and taking things to the car for them. This is for fun.”

According to Bailey, each one of the vendors is hand-picked by her, based on her experiences shopping and picking in south Georgia, south Alabama and Florida.

“We have anything from traditional first-timers to professional antiquers here,” Bailey said. “There are novelty artists and those who specialize in fine art. They can look at something then recreate it. It’s amazing.”

The new endeavor is managed by Christina Silvi who, according to Bailey, brings five years specific experience to the business. The Market Place is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
