"Do we live in the United States or Russia? Now they want to outlaw super-sized soda drinks in New York City. It is about time people take a stand and say enough is enough. We have the freedom to make whatever choices we want."

No, you are wrong, we do not have a choice to do what we want to do. We just think we are entitled to do what we what. We have become an entitled spoiled nation and the rest of the world hates us. The USA could stand to be more like Russia, then we would not be burdened with all the problems we have today. Get over instant gratification and it would be a much better place to live. As far as Russia goes, when the USSR existed, they kept the nations like Bosnia in check and the problems too. Look what it has cost us in monies.

Unfortunately a Representative Democracy only represents those who vote. The Fools that put some of these folks in Office by not voting at all are certanly responsible for the outcome of their lack of participation.

this president is not the one looking for more government intervention into our lives; that would be the republican candidate...he wants government regulation of same sex marriage, contraception, abortion, taxes for the uber-rich, industry, job movements overseas...need I continue?

Obummer and the Demos are going to have government intervene everywhere they can! Okay, so you can't buy a large drink - how about two small ones? Really stupid idea!! But you get the point, eh,Voters??

Michael Bloomberg, a 3-term (and current) Mayor of New York City is the one who proposed restrictions on the serving size of sodas there. He is an Independent, not Democrat.

Relative to affiliation, Bloomberg is a flavor-of-the-month partier. He was a lifelong Democrat who switched to the GOP the same year he ran for mayor, pretending to be a Rudy Giuliani clone. During his second term, he swithced to independent. Returning to the democrat party would have been too obvious I suppose. Whatever he calls himself. he is very liberal in his policies.

And before he was an Independent (Bloomberg), he was a registered Republican. Although he changed his party affiliation in the early 2000's from Democrat to Republican. Just thought you would want to know.

The Squawker ckaims, "We have the freedom to make whatever choices we want." Really? Then why are politicians tyring to regulate contraception, abortion, marriages, tax rates, etc.? Are those not MY choices? Perhaps you meant to suggest that we have the freedom to choose IF we are willing to suffer the consequences.

We all have freedoms. We also have responsibilities, like not running up our private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid bills. 36 ounces of Pepsi is 39 teaspoons of sugar equivalent - that's over 3/4 cup of of sugar in one drink! That will make you fat and very likely diabetic. Howie that patriotic?

Yes, Thomas Jefferson said something very similar over 200 years ago: "When injustice becomes law; resistance becomes duty."

He did. It was a common sentiment during pre-Revolutionary War times, but has also been attributed to others in other periods of history as well. I've always liked it. I certainly don't take credit for it. Unfortunately, it is becoming more appropriate in modern America.

I like it. Set outside any convience store in albany any time of day & watch all the 300 pounders walk in & by their sweepstake tickets. Where do you think they work, they don't. Us people who work pay for all their free-bees including medical. I for one am sick of paying for all these overwieght loosers who are to lazy to work.
