Squawk of the day - June 5, 2012

"I think the problem of overweight children and the increase in diabetes is caused by fast food meals, cutting out health and physical education in schools, providing the sweet breakfast and sugar-filled lunches and children sitting in front of computers."

This is a broad statement. PE in the schools, at least high school is a joke. They are not made to dress out or do any exercise. Vending machines carry calorie laden juices 250 calories or more. But all said and done, the school menus could be made better. You can have a cheeseburger, french fries and some lousy mushy fruit. Menus comprised of several starches and soggy fruit. The vegetables are cauliflower and carrots. Prisoners eat better. Pizza is on menu too much!! As far as diabetes, it is in your genes and you will get it anyway. Just now they are getting it sooner.

When we were kids, we were always outside playing. Not so today.

It is a shame there aren't the Family Farms for them to go to for a Summers work. Funny, it was never too hot to be baling hay and manuring the barn. Now it's too hot to go outside. Boy how times have changed.

Yet you will cheer Sarah Palin when she criticizes the First Lady for trying to convince children to eat healthy. There is no pleasing you I guess.

I guess its Obama's fault because fast food resturants are open. Damn you Obama!

BTW Obama had nothing to do with the gas prices going down.

He had nothing to do with the gas prices going up either.

Neither did Bush, but the Dumbocrats blamed him for the Gas Prices going up.

Perhaps this is the parents fault as well for not cooking decent healthy meals for their family. Instead of cooking breakfast, let's go to McDonald's, for lunch let's go to Burger King, for supper we'll either order a pizza or go to Jimmie's hot dogs, or maybe gtet some fried chicken. Then they will serve them a bag of potato chips, and a bowl of ice cream.

I would certainly like to see anyone that got overweight on eating Jimmy's Hot Dogs. I remember one guy from the Gray Line that used to clean the whole yard in exchange for 20 of them. He did a good job, but I never saw him put on an ounce.

I think the reason he didnt gain an ounce is cause he "cleaned the whole yard". Bet if he ate them and plopped down in front of a tv or computer all day, he would gain.

Don't worry, it will catch up to them.

Probably worked it off by cleaning up the yard. But you know some people are like that. I knew a lady that weighed 105 pounds, but she would eat 15 Krystal cheeseburgers, or a bucket of chicken etc and never gain an ounce. I would probably eat one cheeseburger and feel like I gained 5 pounds.

Could be he was feeding his family that way, 20 hot dogs can feed some hungry kids.

It's all about lifestyle and affordability of healthy foods. What ever the parents are feeding the kids is what the kids will want to eat. The parents also need to encourage exercise and outdoor activities. If you get the kids accustomed to healthy foods, they will not complain because they will have no idea what unhealthy foods taste like. Buy local vegetables and meats(which are cheaper), and exercise regularly. Stay fit. Everyone's metabolism is different. It doesn't necessarily mean if you can eat "15 Krystals or 50 Jimmy's hodogs" and not gain an ounce. These foods still will give you high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and not to mention a saggy appearance.

Parents these days don't cook. Why? Well, their parents didn't cook for them and they don't know how. Such a shame!
