Squawk of the Day - June 7, 2012

"If Michelle Obama is serious about curbing obesity in children, why doesn’t she suggest that the food stamp program be revamped to provide only healthy food? No junk food, soft drinks, potato chips, candy, etc. Seems logical."

A tip of the hat to this person looking for a healthier kid in their growing years.

So a person who has worked hard all of their lives, is 85 years old, on Social Security, needs additional help in order to eat, so applies and is approved for Food Stamps, should be deprived of soft drinks, potato chips, candy, ice cream, etc; Simply because you think that the government should mandate even more so what is purchased on Food Stamps because a PARENT is to lazy to do so? What about the parents who have lost their jobs due to the declining economy (thanks Obama for that) and these parents try to give a little bit of sunlight into a child's life because that child's life has been turned upside down? I think the government is WAY overstepping their bounds and needs to butt the heck out of what is purchased as long as it is food. NOW, the government could make it more difficult to purchase those type items by not allowing Food Stamps to be used at convenient stores where there are NO or little healthy food options available. But to restrict what someone purchases that strictly is WRONG and to much meddling by the government and Obama.

I do agree with your thoughts on this subject, however, I can see why some would want some type of guidelines. They shouldn't tell us what to eat, but you would be suprised just how many food stamp receipiants actually need rules to help them chose wiser. For example, I have seen mothers buy only junk food with their food stamps. I mean, not one healthy thing in the bugy. I felt bad for the children because even though that junk is probably what they wanted, it's not what's best for them. The mother was clueless or she just didn't care.

I don't know what the answer is though because like you said, the government is overstepping their bounds by putting limitations on food stamps. But...... some receipiants really need the guidance because the kids are not being fed properly. A lot of kids that act out or misbehave do not have a healthy balanced diet. It would benefit the kids who have lazy parents but it would punish those of us who know how to eat a BALANCED diet.

Potato chips, Ice cream, candy etc is a luxury, not a necessity.

Also there should be some kind of funding where a low income person can get flex items like diapers or sanitary items.

Totally agree and I have been saying this for a long time. Even if it's just once a month, some money for non food items would greatly assist people in need.

Seems to me there are programs for that. I know a young person, who couldn't wait to have a baby! - did so and got government handouts for nearly everything she and the baby needed! If these people had to pay their own way by the sweat of their brows, they wouldn't have one baby let alone a dozen!!

I believe some of these things are already on the banned list. However, the list could be narrowed even further if that were the real goal. I believe the real goal is to keep folks as happy as possible so they will vote for her Husband.

If you can believe the news, she does not adhere to her eating those healthy things herself. But yes, food stamps should only be for healthy foods. It should not include cases of bottled water or green tea where both can be gotten a lot cheaper by making it yourself.

Agreed Walt. Health has nothing to do with it. Give the people what they want and they will blindly vote for the devil himself....

willie 1 year, 10 months ago

I would think that the majority of persons on assistance don't take the time to vote.

Why do you think Albany is in the shape it is in today?

New to the area. What an eye opener.............

You have a good point squawker. Florida tried to do this recently. Guess where the push back came from? Tea-party leaning Republicans. I say that not to be critical of TPs, but to say that people are all over the map on this one. I think the TPs in Florida fall in line with valid points made by sld above. I also think if SHE (Mrs. Obama) made that point, she would be criticized to high heaven. I think food stamps are important, and like efforts like those that fall in line with the original intent of food stamp law, which was to help the poor and farmers. Efforts to equip farmer markets with the means to take food stamp swipe cards are good legislations IMHO.

What happened to "government out of my life"? Here are the Dem's NOT pushing for big gov't and the Repube's asking for it.

Just as the Plantation Slave owners during slavery, relagated the most undesirable foodstuff to the slaves and kept the best for themselves, the modern day slave owners, i.e. the Democrat Slave Plantation, allows the least desirable food items, in nutrisional value, to their slaves, the Obama voters. Don't get the impression that I am saying ALL food stamp recipients are Obama's & the democrats slaves, just the one's who vote for a living.

0

erudite 1 year, 10 months ago

What? The White House does NOT want to regulate...those who wish to deny food stamps or what they will buy do.

You surely have no concept of slavery to equate it with today's politicking.

0

Clif 1 year, 10 months ago

It has ALL to do with todays politicking. The democrat party is EVERY BIT a slave plantation and the Bishop/Obama voters who vote for a living are slaves to every give me program they offer. You must be very comfortable living on that plantation. Why don't you become a runaway slave and try living in freedom?

I have a simple solution. Just stop issuing food stamps. It is not the government's role to provide food.

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 10 months ago

I recall a story on the news not to long ago where food stamps were being used to buy alcohol (if I am incorrect, I am sure a lot of someones will let me know). This is a government regulated program. If the government sets the standards for receiving food stamps, the the government should set a limit as to what can and cannot be purchased with them. I, too, question why a food stamp recipient can purchase unhealthy junk food with dollars that I WORKED HARD for them to get. But then again, if I were getting free food, I guess I would want to buy the junk, too.

0

VSU 1 year, 10 months ago

Food stamps is a ripoff anyway, a lot of them sell their food stamps for money to buy drugs and lottery tickets and lord knows whatever else.

FlunkyMonkey, maybe 2 years ago there was a report that two local liquor stores allowed use of EBT cards. We are talking 1000s of dollars worth of food stamp receipants either getting cash or liquor at these two stores. And, these two stores are still open today. I never did hear of a report of any fines or discipline action taken. And, they supposedly lose their cards and have them replaced..............please, they either sold the cards or gave them away to someone for who knows what. There are not enough checks and balances within the system. This country has turned into a "fraudulant' play ground. What at one time was for help has turned into a way of life for many generations and they are trained that they are "entitled".

0

waltspecht 1 year, 10 months ago

Those weren't foof stamp cards, but special benefit cards for emergencies. There was no stipulation of what they could be used for, so the stores didn't break any laws, nor did the people abusing them.

0

tommybeall 1 year, 10 months ago

wow. Albany is truly full of idiots..

0

VietVet1 1 year, 10 months ago

Not idiots. If you can get free or low cost housing, welfare checks, food stamps, WIC etc etc.... without lifting a muscle to work but just able to put your hand out for - - give me, give me. They're not idiots - low lifes yes.

0

jglass 1 year, 10 months ago

waltspecht, are you sure about that? Why are special benefit cards given out? Don't these people get enough freebies? I surely thought it was EBT because it was 1000s and 1000s of dollars. It is a shame that so many get handouts fraudulently and the elderly barely get anything.

Although it seems logical that parents wouldn't feed their children "junk", many of these parents are not educated enough to know the difference. We need more education for these parents!
